Subriel Matias grinds grueling majority decision on Alberto Puello in the controversial championship collision, and sets up Dalton Smith show!
Subriel Matias (23-2, 22 COs) looked like a machine on Saturday night, with a constant pressure to take out a 12-round majority decision over WBC Light Welterweight champion Alberto Puello (24-1, 10 COs) at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York.
It was a fight that Puello’s path could have done, but the judges love the pressure Matias applied throughout the fight. He was the one who showed that he had more ambition to work a full three minutes of each round. In contrast, Puello holds out excessively and must have pulled points.
Puello was effective early, landed shots and moved away from Matias. By the fourth round, however, Subriel’s pressure began to tire Puello, which slowed and became more stationary.
Puello was unable to match Matias’ work rate, and used a constant holding, which he used from rounds 4 to 12 as his main line. It was ugly to look at, and the supporters on the ring have Puello every time he held on.
Eventually, the judges prefer Matias’ work and the pressure he applied to Puello. The scores were 114-114, 115-113 and 115-113 for Matias.
After the fight, Turki Alalshikh came into the ring and announced that Matias will defend his WBC title against Dalton Smith in November in Riyadh.
