Arlington, Texas – The long-awaited rematch between two of the best female boxers took place on one of the biggest stages ever. The match served as the co-main event for the worldwide boxing event between headliners Jake Paul and Mike Tyson.
Netflix reported staggering numbers, with 60 million households tuning in to watch the main event and 50 million tuning in to watch the epic fight between Katie Taylor (24-1, 6 KOs) and Amanda Serrano (47-3-1, 31 KOs) to watch. . With 72,000 in attendance at AT&T Stadium, the game was the most watched women’s sports event in history.
Amanda Serrano applied smart pressure and nearly scored a takedown in the 1st round, stunning Katie Taylor with a hard left. Katie looked affected by the punch for the first three rounds, looking somewhat dazed and still recovering from the punch. To get off to an unusually slow start.
Katie was hesitant and cautious; it wasn’t until Serrano suffered a nasty cut over her right eye that Taylor began trading heavily with Serrano. The cut was the result of one of many headbutts given by Taylor Serrano. The fight itself was a war, one that saw both fighters throw 1,263 punches between the two. Amanda beat Taylor 324 to 217 respectively.
Landing 58.2 percent of her punches. Taylor’s face showed the brutality of Serrano’s punches at the post-fight press conference. Taylor needed stitches and had swelling on most of her face – – with swollen eyes, lips, nose and forehead.
Serrano sustained minimal damage with the exception of the nasty cut over her right eye. The two fought to a controversial decision, where Taylor was awarded a unanimous decision despite a points deduction for excessive headbutting in round 8. All three judges scored Taylor 95-94.
Undoubtedly, the first game looked much closer than the second as Serrano looked to take an early lead. However, the controversial decision should not take away from the match between two great warriors who gave everything. Neither gave in and demonstrated to the world why they are two of the best boxers in the world.
At the post-fight press conference, both promoters Eddie Hearn and Nakisa Bidarian expressed interest in a third match and voiced the desires of both Taylor and Serrano. If a third game does happen, it should be just as good as the first two. Both have a fighting spirit and should be commended for their efforts. It is rare to see large fights, much rarer to see two between the same individuals.
