Former WBO Light Middleweight Champion Jaime Munguia (44-2, 35 KOs) was upset and stopped by EBU Silver Middleweight Champion Bruno Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) at 2:36 of the sixth round in a scheduled 10- round fight Saturday night in Tijuana, Mexico.
In the first round, Munguia had a slight lead with both throwing punches after the bell, so referee Juan Jose Ramirez had to step in and call a halt.
In the second round, after a minute, Munguia landed a left hook to the chin and Surace went down for the first time in his career for an 8 count from referee Ramirez. He managed to get to the bell. In the third round, Munguia had Surace on the defensive the entire round, mostly against the ropes, and was lucky to survive until the bell.
In the fourth round it was all Munguia. With half a minute left, Surace landed his best blow of the fight a right uppercut to the chin that rocked Munguia. In the sixth round, Munguia had Surace on the ropes several times, but couldn’t muster enough punches to finish Surace.
In the sixth round, Munguia landed a few lefts to the chin, with Surace against the ropes. Surace countered with a right to the chin, and Munguia went down on his back, barely knocking the count to nine, but referee Ramirez saw enough and wisely called a stop. It took more than ten minutes for announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr. to announce the interruption time for more than ten minutes.

Junior middleweight Jorge ‘Chino’ Garcia, 32-4 (26), defeated Kudratillo ‘The Punisher’ Abdukakhorov, #1581⁄4, of Andijan, UZB, 20-4 (12), over 10 rounds.
In the first three rounds, Abdukakhorov took out Garcia. In the fifth round, Garcia was landing uppercuts and supporting Abdukakhorov.
In the sixth round, Abdukakhorov proceeded to switch to southpaw and go back to orthodox.
In the ninth round, Garcia finished the stronger of the two. In the tenth and final round, Garcia hurt Abdukakhorov in the last seconds.
Score 97-92, 99-90 twice.
In the co-main event, Super Bantamweight Alan Picasso, 31-0-1 (17), knocked out southpaw Yehison Cuello, 13-3-1 (11) at 1:55 of the third round of a scheduled ten round bout.
In the first two rounds it was all Picasso. In the third round, a left hook to the body dropped Cuello for the full count from referee Juan Jose Ramirez.
Super bantamweight Sebastian ‘Logan’ Hernandez Reyes, 18-0 (17), stopped Sergio ‘El Canalla’ Sosa, 14-5-3 (3) at 2:59 of the seventh round of a scheduled ten-rounder.
In the first three rounds, Sosa worked on Hernandez’s body. In the fourth round, Sosa had Hernandez against the ropes for most of the round. In the fifth round, Hernandez came back with his own.
In the seventh round, Hernandez left Sosa defenseless with a barrage of punches, prompting referee Edgar Lopez to call a halt.
Feather WBC Youth Continental champion Christian ‘El Pelon’ Islas, 11-3-1 (7), lost to southpaw Juan Anacona, 13-1 (6) over eight rounds.
Anacona had a lead in the first three rounds. In the fifth round, Islas had his best round, although he suffered a bloody nose.
In the sixth round’s final seconds, the action was stopped when Islas complained about his right eye from an Anacona left. In the seventh round, the nose of the Islas was bleeding, and the right eye was partially closed. In the eighth and final round, Anacona had Islas on defense, who was backed up.
