Boxing results: Floyd Schofield defeats Rene ‘El Bravo’ Tellez Giron


WBA International Lightweight Champion Floyd Schofield easily defeated Rene ‘El Bravo’ Tellez Giron, despite taking a knock on Saturday night at The Virgin Hotels Las Vegas.

In the co-main event, WBA Inter-Continental Super Middleweight Champion Bektemir Melikuziev won a 12-round split decision over David ‘Dynamite’ Stevens.

Schofield (18-0, 12 KOs) defeated ‘El Bravo’ Rene Tellez Giron (20-4, 13 KOs) over 12 rounds.

In the first round it was all about the taller and faster Schofield. In the second round, Schofield switched to southpaw and had another easy round, with Giron on the receiving end throughout.

The third round saw wild blows from both as Schofield claimed to have been hit in the back of the head and turned his back on his opponent when referee Thomas Taylor warned him. Giron may have drawn the round.

In the fourth round, Schofield continued to work out Giron, who seemed unable to deal with Schofield’s hand speed. In the fifth round, Giron continued to pressure Schofield, but was countered.

In the sixth round, both fighters were warned for striking behind the head. Schofield wins through the first half of the fight, but it’s not a crowd pleaser for the fans.

In the seventh round, Schofield continues to switch from orthodox to southpaw, giving Giron a boxing lesson, but is cautioned by referee Taylor for holding on on one occasion.

In the eighth round, Schofield continues to dominate Giron, who is very frustrated coming forward and walking into punches. Between rounds, Schofield’s father trainer is very frustrated with him.

In the ninth round’s final thirty seconds, Schofield took Giron out and then grabbed him, warned by referee Taylor. In the tenth round, Schofield looks frustrated that he can’t drop Giron.

In the eleventh round, Giron landed a left hook that countered a Schofield miss, dropping Schofield for the first time in his career for an 8 count from referee Taylor.

In the twelfth and final round, Schofield continued to dominate, although he looked a little tired as Giron never stopped trying, but completely dominated.

Scores 118-109, 118-109 and 116-111.

In the co-main event, southpaw Meliluziev (15-1, 10 KOs) won a 12-round split decision over Stevens (14-2, 10 KOs).

In the first two rounds Meliluziev had his way. In the third round, Stevens made a fight of it, pulling Meliluziev to the canvas in the final seconds.

In the fifth round, Stevens easily bled Meliluziev’s nose and took the round. From the sixth to the eighth rounds, Stevens had an edge, although close.

In the ninth round, Meliluziev was cut on the left eyebrow, knowing he was in for a fight. In the tenth and eleventh rounds, Stevens seemed to have an edge.

In the twelfth and final round, Meliluziev did more than Stevens, who may need a stoppage.

The scores were 116-112 for Stevens, 118-110 and 117-111 for Meliluziev.

IBF World Flyweight Champion southpaw Gabriella ‘Sweet Poison’ Fundora (15-0, 7 KOs) unified the titles by stopping WBA, WBC and WBO champion Gabriella ‘La Chucky’ Celeste Alaniz (15-2, 6 KOs) at 1:40 of the seventh round of a schedule 10 rounds.

In the first two rounds, the taller southpaw Fundora used her jab. In the third round, Alaniz came back and made a fight of it. In the fifth round, in the final seconds, Fundora snapped Alaniz’s head back with a lead to spare, but it wasn’t enough.

In the seventh round, Fundora dropped Alaniz with a left hand for an 8 count from referee Robert Hoyle. Seconds later another went off Fundora and off again, forcing umpire Hoyle to wave it off.

Welterweight Joel Iriarte (5-0, 5 KOs) stopped Xavier Madrid (5-6, 2 KOs) at 2:50 of the first round of a scheduled six rounder.

In the first round, Iriarte had Madrid in trouble early, and in the final minute a right to the chin dropped Madrid as referee Thomas Taylor waved it away.

WBA Super Middleweight Darius ‘DFG’ Fulghum (12-0, 10 KOs) stopped southpaw Christopher Pearson (17-4-1, 12 KOs) at 1:02 of the third round of a scheduled ten rounder.

In the first round, Fulghum dropped Pearson for an 8 count in the final seconds. In the second round, Fulghum overpowered Pearson. In the third round, which landed more than half a dozen punches, Fulghum was declared the winner by referee Mike Ortega.

Bantamweight Jordan Fuentes (2-0) defeated Roberto Cantu Pina (4-5, 3 KOs) over four rounds. The scores were 40-36, 40-36 and 40-36.

Super featherweight Dalis Kaleiopue (6-0, 4 KOs) defeated Manuel Lerna (4-1) over six rounds.

The scores were 60-54, 60-54 and 60-54.

Featherweight Asa ‘Ace’ Stevens (7-0, 2 KOs) defeated Garen ‘Hellboy’ Diagan (10-5, 5 KOs) over six rounds.

The scores were 60-54.
