Former three divisions world champion Vasily Lomachenko retired in the Pro match after 12 years. Two-time Olympic gold medalist Lomachenko (18-3, 12 COs) reportedly burned out on the sport for injuries, lack of motivation and spending time with his family.
Lomachenko retires: end of the era
Vasily’s record as amateur is 396-1. Many boxing fans would agree that if the Ukrainian Lomachenko had become Pro earlier, he would have achieved much more because he spent some of his best years in the amateur ranks, won and dominated medals.

If Lomachenko stayed at 126 and 130, where he was more suitable in terms of size, he would still be dominated and considered the number 1 fighter in those weight classes. He was big by his opponents on lightweight when he went up in 2018.
His fight against the much larger Devin Haney in 2023 was an example of Lomachenko’s lack of size for the 135 pound division. Still, he decided to stay in the weight class rather than return to 130 after losing a controversial decision to Devin.
The 37-year-old Loma now needs rich and not money, and decided to hang his gloves. He fought last a year ago when he was the former Unified Lightweight Champion George Kambosos jr. In the 11th round to win the vacant IBF title of 135 pounds on May 12, 2024 in Perth, Australia.
The WBA champion, Gerrvonta Davis, hoped to fight Lomachenko in a unification, but the fight could not take place because Loma chose to take the rest of 2024.
With the retirement of Vasily, his IBF lightweight title becomes vacant, and interim champion Raymond Muratalla is expected to be elevated to the full belt holder with the organization. For the highest rank, it is positive because he is with them and holds the IBF title in their possession.
