Borussia Dortmund, sitting comfortably in second place in the Bundesliga with 58 points, hosted Hamburger SV, an impressive 11th-placed team following their recent return to the top flight. The stage was set for a compelling encounter, with BVB looking to keep the pressure on at the top. HSV, meanwhile, aimed to disrupt their high-flying opponents.
The visitors stunned the home crowd by taking an early lead. In the 19th minute, Philip Otele guided the first goal, assisted by W. Mikelbrencis. This unexpected goal silenced the Yellow Wall and gave HSV confidence.
Hamburger SV extended their lead before the break. Albert Sambi Lokonga fired in his second goal in the 38th minute, assisted by Fábio Vieira. Dortmund found themselves two goals down, a rare and worrying situation at home.
Just before the break, BVB had a golden opportunity to halve the deficit. Felix Nmecha went ahead with a penalty in the 45th minute, but his effort denied Dortmund a crucial lifeline. Yellow cards to Nicolai Remberg and Karim Adeyemi followed in stoppage time, reflecting the growing tension.
At the break, Borussia Dortmund faced a major challenge. Manager Edin Terzic needed a tactical change and an injection of energy to spark a comeback. The team required drastic improvement to turn around the two-goal deficit.
Terzic responded with decisive changes at the restart. Ramy Bensebaini and Serhou Guirassy came on in the 46th minute, immediately impacting the dynamics of the game. These substitutions were instrumental in changing Dortmund’s fortunes.
As the second half unfolded, Dortmund pressed relentlessly. HSV defended bravely, but the pressure mounted. W. Mikelbrencis received a yellow card for a foul in the 72nd minute, conceding a penalty.
Bensebaini calmly converted the spot-kick in the 73rd minute, bringing Dortmund back into the game. The stadium erupted as the comeback gathered momentum. Just five minutes later, Guirassy equalized and scored a crucial goal in the 78th minute.
With parity restored, Dortmund pushed for a winner. In the 84th minute, Bensebaini won and converted another penalty and achieved a spectacular victory. His second penalty of the night sealed an unforgettable turnaround.
Borussia Dortmund’s stats painted a picture of dominance despite early struggles. They finished with 69% possession, 24 total shots (8 on target) and an Expected Goals (xG) figure of 6.41, much higher than HSV’s 1.47 xG with just 4 total shots (all 4 on target). HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes made 5 crucial saves, keeping his team in the game for long periods.
