Six-time All-Star Blake Griffin was a double-double machine during his NBA career. It’s an outcome he avoids now that he spends more time on the course.
GOLF: As a young golf convert, what is one piece of advice you can give to other beginners trying to improve their game?
Blake Griffin: Good question. Here’s something I learned early in my basketball career: It doesn’t matter what you do in the first quarter; it’s what you do during the game. The same goes for golf. It’s what you do during your round. You can have a great drive and then fumble the next shot. Things are never as good as they seem or as bad as they seem. You just have to ride the wave, and that’s what I love about golf.
G: Strong take. Now that you are retired from the NBA (as of 2023), where is the place you want to play and finally have the time to get there?
BG: I played in many interesting places, but I heard Dunat Bandon it’s big. I’d like to go up there and check it out.

G: Where are you playing most of your golf now?
BG: I am a member of Lakeside Golf & Country Club in LA I have a good group of guys that I play with regularly, but we also like to go to other places.
G: Speaking of travel, the NBA has some long road trips. Do you ever wish you’d been playing golf back in the day when you’d see your teammates take a day off to get in a round?
BG: Man, being on the road in the NBA means you have to find your way. That’s what I tried to do.
G: You are famous for once jumping over a car in the slam dunk contest, which you won. Which golf landmark would be good to jump over? Swilcan Bridge? Rae’s Creek?
BG: (laugh) I don’t think I can get over anything now. That was a long time ago, man.
G: Except Invitation at 8 amwhat are some other famous tournaments you’ve had the opportunity to play in?
BG: I played in Tahoe – the Edgewood tournament (American Championship of the Century). It had about 20,000 fans a day. That first day, I was very nervous. I felt like I was swinging during practice shots, you know. Like, even when I wasn’t ready to hit the ball, I was still nervous.
G: In general, are there any shots on the course that you are most nervous about?
BG: Like, anything. I don’t even want to say it. As soon as I say it, it will be there. Okay, every shot from 65 to 85 yards. I don’t know why.
G: Golfers have been known to enjoy putting a few dollars on their games. Keeps things interesting. How big does a nervous bet make you?
