Bill Haney says he has some “Big News” coming soon about his son Devin Haney’s next fight. Devin (31-0, 15 KOs) has been on the bench since his loss seven months ago, and it looks like he may finally be back in action.
Papa Haney will look silly if Devin’s next opponent is a tomato can or an old washed-up veteran like many of the guys he built his 31-0 record on. No one is expecting much from Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) for his comeback, given the beating he took from Ryan Garcia on April 20 in Brooklyn, New York.
Devin needs someone like Oscar Duarte to show he can handle a puncher without being repeatedly sent into the ground. However, this is unrealistic. Billy isn’t crazy enough to let Devin fight Duarte and see him get destroyed.
“Working on something BIG,” said Bill Haney on X.
To help build the Kingry rematch, Haney should face the likes of Alberto Puello, Arnold Barboza Jr. or fight Richardson Hitchins. Neither of those fights have any chance of happening.
Haney shouldn’t lose because he has the mega-money rematch with Ryan Garcia in 2025, and they won’t want to waste that cash. However, Devin has to fight someone to get the taste out of the mouths of fans, who cannot forget the image of being dropped three times by Kingry.
My prediction is that Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero will be selected for Haney. That guy seems right up their alley. Rolly (16-2, 13 KOs) is flawed, has lost two of his last four fights and is a good trash talker. Romero would help sell a fight between him and Devin on PPV. Boxing fans will eat it up.
It would be a mistake for former two-division world champion Devin, 26, to face another big punch after what Garcia did to him. Even a former paper champion like Rolly would be a high-risk opponent for Haney, and he may regret fighting him.
While they talk, we work. While they doubt, we deliver.
