The WBO welterweight champion Brian Norman Jr. and challenger Devin Haney also made weight for their co-fight. Both looked strong this week, with no signs of weight loss.
Riyadh Weighs In: The Numbers
- David Benavidez 174.3 vs. Anthony Yarde 173.9
- Devin Haney 146.6 vs. Brian Norman Jr. 146.12
- Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez 114.6 vs. Fernando Daniel Martinez 113.2
- Abdullah Mason 134 vs. Sam Noakes – 134.9
The one boxing fans have concerns about for Saturday’s fight is WBC light heavyweight champion Benavidez (30-0, 24 KOs). He has looked thin this week, causing some to worry if he will be weakened for his defense against the big punching #4 WBC ranked Yarde (27-3, 24 KOs).
Bam vs. Martinez: Hidden Gem
WBC and WBO super flyweight champion Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez (22-0, 15 KOs) weighed in at 114.6 lbs today, while his opponent, WBA champion Fernando Martinez (18-0, 9 KOs), weighed in well under the 115-lb limit at 113.2 lbs.
This fight wasn’t talked about as much as the joint fight between Haney and Norman Jr. Still, Rodriguez-Martinez could provide more action due to their aggressive fighting styles.
Lightweight Abdullah Mason (19-0, 17 KOs) weighed in at 134, and Sam Noakes (17-0, 15 KOs) came in at 134.9 for their fight for the vacant WBO 135 lb title. This is another fight worth main supporting or even starring on this career as it is expected to be entertaining with both fighters dropping bombs non-stop for as long as it lasts.
Norman Jr. ‘Go to War’ vow
“We’re getting rough here. We respect Devin Haney for what you’re capable of doing. I respect you, but we have to go to war. So, when I got every little thing, so when you step on the ground here, you’re going to die,” said WBO welterweight champion Brian Norman Jr. MillCity Boxingtalks in fight/war terms about his fight Saturday night against challenger Devin Haney.
“I’ve got cameras here making sure I cut every corner. So, I’m respectfully disrespectful,” Norman Jr. said.
