Promoter Eddie Hearn today, October 6, revealed that he signed 2020 Olympic silver medalist Ben Whittaker to a long -term agreement with the match room.
Matchroom’s power movement
Hearn said it was ‘the biggest signing to get in boxing today’. He adds that he considers Ben a possible ‘Generation -talent.’
BIVOL & BETTERBIIV -Window Close
Whittaker (9-0-1, 6 COs) comes at the right time, as the current top-light heavyweights, Dmitri Bivol and Artur Betterbiev, approach the advanced age. Who knows how long they have before they both retire?
Whittaker, 28, has been at Boxxer since entering the pro ranks in 2022. Some fans feel that he has wasted his talent all the time by staying with them rather than inking the pro ranks right out of the pro ranks.
Hearn discusses the signing of Whittaker at the London press conference on October 17, 2025.
Whittaker is #9 WBC, #11 WBA, and #13 IBF on light heavyweight. He arrives on April 20, 2025 with a second round about Liam Cameron in their re -broadcast.
In their first fight on October 12, 2024 in Riyadh, it ended in a bizarre sixth round technical draw when Whittaker fell out of the ring and sustained a frantic injury. Some box fans believe he did it deliberately to escape the fight, because it went bad for him at the time.
Frank Smith calls it a game changer
Frank Smith, CEO of Matchroom, calls the signing of Whittaker a ‘game changer’. It will be interesting to see if Smith and Hearn can lead him to a world title.
Despite winning a silver medal in the 2020 Olympics, he is still largely inexperienced as a pro. At 28, he is at an age where he has to be ready to run the ground and fight the best. They cannot afford to take the slow approach with Whittaker as with other fighters with only nine fights under their belts.
Andy Lee trains Whittaker, and he considers it a ‘fresh start’ that joins the match room.
