BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia breaks silence on Auqib Nabi’s India selection after his Ranji Trophy heroics

He took seven five-wicket hauls in the tournament – eight in a total first-class season – equaling the record for most five-wicket hauls by a pacer in a single season in India. His impact was most felt in the playoffs. Nabi scored five goals in the quarter-finals, repeated the feat in the semi-finals and then produced a match-deciding spell in the final that decisively swung the contest in Jammu and Kashmir’s favour.

Not surprisingly, he was named Player of the Series for his dominant performances. With such consistency and match-winning displays, many former cricketers and pundits have openly demanded his inclusion in the Indian national team.

Devajit Saikia meets the selection requirements for Nabi

Amid growing clamor over Nabi’s recall to India, BCCI the secretary Devajit Saikia he touched on the issue in his interview The Times of India. Saikia acknowledged the pacer’s remarkable performances and confirmed that his efforts have not gone unnoticed.

“He played very well. His contribution to the team’s success was huge. He took five wickets in the quarter-finals, five wickets in the semi-finals and didn’t concede anything in the final. His magic changed the final. That’s why everyone is celebrating it.” Saikia said.

The BCCI secretary also highlighted the board’s commitment to ensure that talent from all over the country gets due recognition. Saikia’s comments suggest that while not guaranteed immediate selection, Nabi remains firmly on the radar of national voters.

“The BTSO has set the stage so that no worthy talent is overlooked. When the selectors are involved, they only focus on the performances of the players and watch them closely. So many players from smaller and lesser-known places get an opportunity to represent the country. As for Nabi, he came from Baramulla. Who brought him to this position? But he was not selected by the selectors in JCI and K. cricket and represents the state team, BCCI selectors they watch local matches” he added.

Jammu and Kashmir’s historic Ranji triumph

The 2025-26 season of Ranji Trophy will forever be remembered in the cricketing history of Jammu and Kashmir. On 28 February 2026, the team won their first Ranji Trophy title, making their first appearance in the final.

For Nabi, the title was not only a personal milestone but also a symbol of the region’s cricketing revival. It remains to be seen whether his Ranji heroics will soon translate to an India cap, but one thing is certain – his name is now firmly etched in the national conversation.
