BCCI clears the air with an official statement on Shubman Gill’s future in Australia Tests against India

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has provided an important update on the injury of young all-rounder Shubman Gill ahead of the first Test match against Australia. Notably, the BCCI has confirmed that Shubman Gill is not considered for selection for the inaugural Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25.

Gill was the second batsman to miss the first Test of the five-match series in Australia. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has not joined the Test team due to personal reasons. Gill injured his thumb in training when sliding during a three-day match simulation before the trial.

Shubman’s thumb injury was initially believed to be a fracture. However, later reports revealed that there were no fractures. India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel said Gill is improving “day by day” and a final decision on his fitness will be made on the morning of the Test match.

Shubman Gill not considered for selection – BCCI

Shubman Gill was not included in the playing XI for the Perth Test with Devdutt Padikkal replacing him. A team of Indian doctors are closely monitoring his recovery, with daily updates on his condition. Note that there is a gap of 10 days between the first and second Test matches.

“Shubman Gill injured his left thumb during Day 2 of the game simulation at the WACA. He is not considered for selection for the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy,” the BCCI said in a statement.

“The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress on a daily basis,” the statement added.

Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy made their Test debuts in Perth

Led by Jasprit Bumrah, the team fielded a young looking side with Rohit Sharma, Mohammed Shami and Shubman Gill. KL Rahul was named the opening partner for Yashasvi Jaiswal. The Indian national cricket team also gave debut caps to Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy.

Speaking during the toss, Jasprit Bumrah said that he is confident about their preparations and pitch conditions. He said the team will strike first as the goalkeeper looks promising. Bumrah said in 2018, given his previous experience at the venue, the pitch has moved faster with time.

“We will bat first, looks like a good wicketkeeper. We are very confident about our preparation. We played a test match here in 2018, so we know what to expect. The wicket is getting faster. Nitish is making his debut. We have 4 fast bowlers and Washi is the lone spinner,” said Bumrah. As quoted by Cricbuzz.

Playing XI for India’s first Test against Australia:

Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (wk), Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Jasprit Bumrah (c) and Mohammed Siraj.

The first Test between India and Australia began on Friday, November 22 at the Optus Stadium in Perth. Notably, the visiting team lost their first four wickets for less than 50 runs on the board. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Devdutt Padikkal, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul are back in the dressing room.
