Battle of the Davids Banavidez vs. Morrell


In what is considered the eventual resentment match of 2025, the former two-time WBC World Super Middleweight Champion David Benavidez (29-0, 24 COs) will face David Morrell (11-0, 9 COs), 1 February in the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, which is broadcast live on Amazon Prime Ppv.

David Banavidez and David Morrell were the two top contenders in the 168 pound division, but unfortunately the then undisputed super-middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez managed to avoid both. After winning the WBC World Super Middleweight title at the age of 20, David Banavidez was stripped a year later due to a failed drug test. Benavidez would save himself on September 28, 2019, when he stopped Anthony Dirrell in the 9th round and became a two-time WBC world champion.

Banavidez’s triumph was short -lived, as he would have stripped his title for a second time. David Banavidez, who went into his fight against Roamer Alexis Angulo, weighed 2.8 pounds over the pound of 168 pounds.

David Morrell made his pro-box debut in August 2019 when he scored a first round win over Yendris Rodriguez Valdez. In the third match of his professional career, Morrell achieved a unanimous victory over Lennox Allen and won the vacant WBA (ordinary) super-middleweight title.

During a two -year period, Morrell had five successful defense of his title. Morrell was the other compulsory of Canelo, but he never pressed the issue of being shot at the undisputed crown because he was convinced that Canelo would never fight against him.

Instead of focusing on an undisputed title event, Morrell decided to target benavidez. David Banavidez held on to Hope as it was related to a title event against Canelo, but once Benavidez realized that a world title match on 168 was not realistic, he moved up to 175.

David Banavidez made his lightweight debut in June 2024 when he achieved a unanimous victory over Oleksandr Gvozdyk and won the WBC Tuesday. Two months later, his rival David Morrell made his lightweight debut by pointing out Radivoje Kalajdzic and winning the WBA (ordinary) lightweight title.
