Barboza Jr. in enemy territory: can he overcome Catterall and the judges?

Jack Catterall released a clip on X, mocking his reputation for being a boring fighter ahead of his 12-round headliner against #1 Arnold Barboza Jr. on February 15 at the Co-op Live Arena in Manchester, England.

Catterall embraces the criticism

Catterall (30-1, 13 KOs) embraces his “boring” identity, making fun of it, and not fighting it by denying what everyone can see. Some fans consider him a poor man’s Shakur Stevenson once you remove the hand speed, cat-like reflexes and detect star mobility. With a good cup of coffee in one’s system, watching Catterall fight is tolerable.

Jack’s dull tactics:

  • Holding constant
  • Move
  • Excessive feints
  • Low output

Jack seems to be trying to imitate Shakur’s fighting style, which makes him poison for the eyes. I’m surprised that DAZN put this fight as the main event on one of their broadcasts because this matchup won’t appeal to American fans, who have a high taste for quality fights. Americans don’t like to be bored.

Barboza wins this fight easily on paper as he is a better talent than Catterall with superior skills, jabs and mobility. You name it, he has it. However, with this fight taking place in Manchester, England, it puts Barboza Jr’s back against the wall, and he may have to really put it on Catterall to get the win. It goes without saying that Catterall will use his typical tactics to make the contest unwatchable for fans.

Barboza’s best wins

– Jose Ramirez
– Danielito Zorrilla
– Antonio Moran
– Alex Saucedo
– Sean McComb
– José Pedraza

Barboza (31-0, 11 KOs) and Catterall will fight for the vacant WBO 140 lb interim title in the showdown that will be shown live on DAZN.

The winner of this match will be in line to challenge the reluctant WBO champion, Teofimo Lopez, who has shown no interest in fighting either of these guys. Lopez has been sitting on his WBO title for two years and has been making voluntary defenses since winning the belt in 2023. It will be interesting to see if Teo vacates or the winner of Catterall-Barboza Jr. to face.
