Another golf season is coming to an end, and while the richest pros on the PGA Tour and LIV Golf got significantly richer over the year, we’re still without a final deal that officially ends golf’s divorce.
As a result, both parties are continuing on their separate paths. The PGA Tour, for example, is considering a number of changes to reduce the size of fields on tour to a more manageable size. of The changes are currently before the Players Advisory Councilawaiting its decision.
Among the strategies to achieve their goal of smaller tournaments is the elimination of Qualifying Monday in some tournaments and reducing the places available in the Monday Qualifiers in other events.
For those who don’t know, Monday Qualifiers provide an opportunity for non-Tour players to play their way into that week’s tournament. They have been the source of many thrill stories of unknown players earning a spot in PGA Tour events.
But now that can largely come to an end. Enter the son of the current CEO of LIV Golf Greg NormanGreg Norman Jr.
After hearing about the possible changes to Monday’s PGA Tour qualifiers, Norman Jr. went to X to share a wild idea about LIV that he’s “been preaching for a while.”
The idea? Run weekly qualifiers at LIV events to create a “People’s Team” to compete against pros like Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau.
“For what it’s worth… I’ve been preaching for a while that LIV should absolutely open weekly qualifiers to a People’s Team, a team that anyone can qualify for,” Norman Jr. wrote. in X. “If it plays well, it stays. on the team and the general public can participate in the joint ownership and governance.”
Now, qualifying events will likely prevent any true Average Joe hacks from duking it out against the pros, as is the case with Monday’s PGA Tour Qualifiers. But it would still provide a new and fun way to get sports fans interested in the fledgling league.
Whether it can become a reality or not is another question. Elder Norman’s contract with LIV expires at the end of the year and we don’t yet know if it will be renewed or if someone else will take over at LIV Golf.
