I remember being sitting in the back of my high school mathematics class, stealing graphic paper to sketch the strange holes and then trying to recreate them in Tiger Woods PGA Tour in my PS2 when I returned home.
Twenty years later (when I find the time), I’m still designing and shaking holes in PGA Tour 2K23. For the most artistically prone (though experienced), there is also an opportunity for you:
History
Every year, Alister MacKenzie Society Offers amateur architects, players and stylists the opportunity to design their golf hole. This competition is an opportunity to “honor the memory of Dr. Alister Mackenzie and recognize the potential of a future architect.”
Started in 1998, many of the competition winners have continued to succeed architectural careers. Names like Bo Links, Craig Snyder and Jeff Martz have won this coveted award among golf architects.
The competition, most often referred to as the “Lido Competition”, comes from the drawing of MacKenzie himself for a “two -stroke hole”. The purpose of the competition remains steadfast every year: “Build a hole that (gives) the viewers a clear idea of how the holes would be built and played. It should show yards, locations, alternative game routes, risks, bunkers, green locations and alternative pin settings and sides of the ground.”
A simple but scary task.
Details
For this effort, there are guidelines even though some are distinguished.
- The hole “is not less than 360 yards, nor more than 460 yards in length, as measured from the back of the thesis land in the center of the green.”
- No competitor can present more than one drawing.
- Models can be drawn either by hand or aided with computer. The color is not required, but the features should be shown to be similar to the “Lido” drawing in the form of entry.
- No logo or mention of the architect’s name/address.
- The deadline to submit is May 1, 2025.
And while the app describes other rules and boundaries, the goal is simple: design a golf hole reminiscent of the original model of Alister Mackenzie. The winner gets $ 3,000 (and an additional $ 2,000 if they participate in the Jockey Club in Argentina to accept).
So sharpen those pencils, dust from those art skills and go to work! Just make sure you don’t end up as one of these guys.
