Athletics at Scotstoun as Glasgow hosts 2026 Commonwealth Games

The Scottish city replaces Victoria to host the scaled-down championships two years later

Glasgow’s Scotstoun Stadium will be the center of the Commonwealth Games in 2026 after the city agreed to host the event.

This follows the Australian state of Victoria pulling out of hosting it due to rising costs.

Glasgow last hosted the Games in 2014, an event that was a huge success, and Scotland also hosted the Games in Edinburgh in 1970 and 1986.

The last games were staged in Birmingham, England, two years ago.

Australia has pledged a “multi-million pound investment” to help complete the deal with Commonwealth Games Australia, writing to the Commonwealth Games Federation to formally support the “scaled-down but high-quality” event that will host 10 sports. at four locations in the city.

Scottish Commonwealth Games President Ian Read said: “We have been clear from the outset that our concept for the Glasgow 2026 Games is in line with the CGF’s strategy to make the Games more accessible to future hosts, while ensuring that public funds are not required.

“Glasgow is one of the few Commonwealth cities that can deliver just-in-time, given its world-class capabilities, experienced workforce and strong supply chain.

“This is a really exciting opportunity and we will be working hard in the coming days to put the final pieces of the puzzle together.”

Organizers say the games will be free to the public, with funding coming from compensation paid to the CGF after Australia’s withdrawal. However, the UK government will provide financial support in the event of any security threats.

CGF President Chris Jenkins said: “We have been working with Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) and the Scottish Government for a number of months and are delighted to hear that CGS have received Government support to enable them to progress their bid to host. Games in 2026

“At the heart of our discussions was the CGF’s £100m contribution and the commitment that Glasgow 2026 would not require financial underwriting from either the Scottish or UK Governments. Commonwealth Games Australia’s generous additional contribution of around £2.3 million to the Glasgow concept will further strengthen the delivery of the Games and is a strong sign of support and enthusiasm for the concept within the wider Commonwealth Games movement.
