Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that several players will be leaving the club as the Gunners prepare for a crucial summer transfer window. Following Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Southampton, Arteta revealed that Kieran Tierney, Jorginho, Raheem Sterling, and goalkeeper Neto will depart, marking the beginning of a squad overhaul.
Reflecting on the departures, Arteta stated, “It was important to win it, it was important as well to say goodbye to a few players who have left our football club, to say thank you for their contribution”. He specifically mentioned Tierney’s long tenure at the club, saying, “Some of them, like Kieran, they’ve been on this journey for six years with us. Jorginho, we’re trying to hug him, Neto and Raheem as well”.
Additionally, Arteta acknowledged the emotional nature of these farewells, adding, “So, there are a few players that I had the duty to say thank you to. I think we all have and we wish them the best for the next season”. He also shared a lighthearted moment about Tierney’s final match, saying, “[Kieran] mentioned it yesterday, he said ‘I’m going to score in my last game’ and he’s certainly done it”.
With Arsenal aiming to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season, Arteta emphasized the need for reinforcements, stating, “Obviously we need players because the squad is really short, and on top of that, we are losing four or five players”.
As the club moves forward, Arteta and the Arsenal hierarchy will be working diligently to secure new signings and ensure the team remains competitive in the Premier League and European competitions.
