Riccardo Calafiori was hesitant to participate Arsenal’s midweek Champions League win but he shook off a knee complaint to play the entire game. However, Jurrien Timber had to be substituted after struggling with what manager Mikel Arteta described as “a muscular thing”.
Ben White is also at risk of missing out as he continues to have a groin problem, but Takehiro Tomiyasu has returned to training and could be used to ease Arteta’s concerns at full-back.
Elsewhere, Martin Odegaard is unavailable, with The Norway manager offers a worrying update on the Arsenal captainwhile Kieran Tierney and Oleksandr Zinchenko are also sidelined.
Predicted Arsenal vs Southampton line-up (4-3-3): Stripe; Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori; Rice, Partey; Saka, Trossard, Martinelli; havertz
Southampton fell to their fifth defeat in six league games on Monday night, but a whole raft of changes implemented by manager Russell Martin is unlikely.
Jack Stephens has had his ban extended by two more games so he remains out, while Kamaldeen Sulemana, Will Smallbone and Gavin Bazunu will play no part at the Emirates.
There will be a return to north London for visiting goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who made 89 appearances for the Gunners before being usurped as a starting spot by David Raya.
Southampton predicted line-up against Arsenal (3-5-2): Ramsdale; Harwood-Bellis, Bednarek, Taylor; Sugawara, Fernandes, Downes, Aribo, Walker-Peters; Archer, Brereton-Diaz.
However, Arsenal have shown little sign of a slump of late last weekend’s spectacular win over Leicester City it could be in their heads before the visit of another promoted club.
Southampton have stuck to their guns in their return to the top flight but it has come at a cost, with Monday’s loss possibly their worst this season.
The Gunners are expected to play at home on Saturday and Ramsdale may not be able to enjoy his return to his former club.
