Arsenal have ‘smiled back’ after north London derby win

Arsenal interim manager Renee Slegers said her side are enjoying football again after their crushing north London derby victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Women’s Super League.

An emphatic display from the Gunners on Saturday saw the side extend their unbeaten run under Slegers’ caretaker manager, making it five wins and a draw from six matches.

Alessia Russo opened the scoring in the first two minutes against Frida Maanum and Stina Blackstenius made it 3-0 to the visitorstaking them up to 12 points from seven WSL matches

Slegers reflected on the win in north London, talking about how the players have recently taken responsibility for getting results.

“One of the words we use a lot on this blog is ‘ruthless,'” Slegers explained. “We want to be ruthless in both boxes. It’s easy to say that, but to turn it into action is much more difficult. The players try to turn it into action, we try to facilitate them and emphasize a couple of things. , but They’re really doing it and I’m very happy that they’re successful with what they’re doing at the moment. We have to keep it going and develop it further because there are new challenges.”

It seems that the smiles are back on the faces arsenal players and fans, something Slegers put as the culmination of things.

“It’s very positive, it means a lot for the players, the squad, the club and the fans,” Slegers smiled. “It’s the chicken or the egg question, where do smiles come from? Behaviors are also contagious, when one person starts smiling, others smile too. Where it started is hard to understand, there are many factors, but I’m happy it seems to be happening.”

As Slegers continues to lead Arsenal to success, a lot of buzz has started to emerge about whether or not he is the right person for the permanent job. Slegers didn’t reveal anything when asked if he wants the role full-time.

She revealed: “The block has been going really well so far and we have one more game to go and we will do everything we can to get a good result and a good performance in this last game. After that we start to catch our breath, but in them at the moment we stay in this focus because we have a lot of work to do.”
