When it comes to golf shoes, there’s one thing I take very seriously and that’s protection from the elements.
Even in the desert sometimes, golf courses can be wet places, and the quickest way to ruin a good day on the course is a pair of wet socks, especially on a cold day.
This is what intrigued me True Linkswear’s new Ascent PNWProof golf shoes.
I lived in Bend, Oregon, for two years, and while it’s on the dry side of the Cascades, I occasionally get a glimpse of the elements that might be at play in the Pacific Northwest.
So when I made one trip to Seattle to play Chambers Bay last fall, in NovemberI knew I needed a pair of shoes that would get me through the wet day.
It turns out that the New Ascents were indeed PNW trials.
Here is my review of the shoe, looking at five factors: stability, traction, comfort/fit, style, and most importantly for these purposes, the elements.
elements
While I was fortunate to draw on a beautiful fall day with temperatures in the high 50s and mostly sunny, the golf course was still quite wet in spots.
However, there was never a time when I thought I was wearing the wrong shoes, as my feet stayed completely dry for the entire five-hour round. Impressive, considering there were some low areas of the golf course where we had to move the golf balls because there was temporary water.
I’ve yet to wear the shoes while it’s actually raining, but with as much water as there was on the course, I’m confident these shoes are indeed PNWPproof (and they’re backed by a 1-year waterproof warranty).
Comfort/Fit
The Ascent PNWProofs really have an edge, being built from a running shoe platform that really feels a lot more like a trail running shoe than a golf shoe. Because of this, these shoes slip on and off with ease and you can wear them on your feet for hours.
Walking Chambers Bay meant climbing over 21,000 steps and walking up and down hills. Regardless, it’s not like I was rushing back to the car to change my shoes. I felt like I could easily go for 36.
I wear a size 11, which is the same size as most other pairs of shoes.
STABILITy
As with many golf shoes built on a running shoe foundation, the Ascents have a good amount of material on the outsole, and I could feel my heel moving slightly vertically as I walked. But that doesn’t really bother me and adds to my comfort. Lateral stability is what I care about the most and I’ve never had a problem.

Withdrawal
I never wear spiked shoes anymore, but I’m still amazed at how much traction I can get from spikes that look so minimal.
The traction pattern on the bottom actually looks more like a hiking shoe, and I bet these will work well on the trail as well.
STYLE
Available in black, white and rainer yellow, the shoes won’t necessarily be the centerpiece of your ensemble, but they won’t hurt either.
I think the style of this shoe really fits the functional vibe of a great pair of shoes for an 18 second session, a quick 9 or a range session.
True PNWPproof adhesive
Designed to handle the elements with a 1-year waterproof warranty, the Ascent PNWProof is an all-weather shoe that combines supremely flexible comfort, breathable construction and trail-inspired traction for versatility on and off the course. With Wanderlux’s supercritical mid foam and a TRUE comfort collar, it delivers uncompromising cushioning, support and durability—designed for golfers and adventurers alike.
