About 40 years ago, an elderly friend, Merion Golf Club The member asked John Capers III if he would be interested in a project.
The club had piles of golf -bound materials, scattered about a room filled with light in its Pro store. Sunlight can be the best disinfectant, but it can destroy pictures and documents, never forget the mess. Would Capers start – a major story as well as a Division I player – organize all those things?
Capers set out to work, and, finally, the Ardmore club, without. The room has abundant layout cabinets, hanging files for clothing and bookshelves for display. Today, the archive contains approximately 1,500 books dating from the 1860s and about an equal number of collectives. The conditions here are just as perfect for the purpose as merit greens: 70 degrees, 50 percent moisture, without natural light.
“The initial goal was to organize a mess,” says Capers, now the chairman of the club archives committee. “The current goal is to create a Merion Golf Club’s history warehouse dating from its origin in the late 1800s.”
The archive is available at any time for members who often bring guests for a tour. Also open to visitors with a meeting, which tends to take place about diplomas in Merion. The other six USGA championships by 2050 are planned for the club, which already owns the record to host such events. The story goes on rapidly.
