Manchester United winger Amad Diallo has admitted that “apologising is not enough” in an emotional address to fans at the end of 2024.
Amad enjoyed his first consistent run in the United line-up towards the end of the calendar year after previously struggling to claim, racking up ten goals and assists in the last two months.
But these promising individual displays have been met against a backdrop of team struggles. United lost five times in December alone and conceded 18 goals matches an unwanted club record.
United’s form even led new head coach Ruben Amorim, whose honeymoon period was limited to just two games before the harsh reality hit, to recognize the word R: descent.
On New Year’s Eve, the day after a tame performance at the defeat at home to Newcastle UnitedAmad addressed his 600,000 followers on X, formerly Twitter.
“A very difficult year, apologies are not enough,” he told fans directly.
“…but you’ve supported us and continued to do so all this time…thank you.”
Amorim is trying to implement new methods and a whole new tactical system halfway through a season where almost every week is a three-match week, meaning the chance to really work on things in training is pretty much non-existent
Things won’t get any easier either, with a short trip down the M62 to Liverpool to face the league leaders on Sunday. The reverse meeting at Old Trafford in September ended in a 3-0 defeat, while it was just two years ago that united they were annihilated 7-0 at Anfield.
