Newcastle United enjoyed a 3-1 win over Brentford last night to send them into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.
Master Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali was in particularly strong form for Eddie Howe’s side, scoring twice in the win at St James’ Park, and he also came very close to a hat-trick!
Tonali has not had as many opportunities to establish himself at Newcastle due to the betting ban he picked up at the start of last season, not long after joining the Magpies from AC Milan.

Now, however, the 24-year-old is back in the team and playing at a very high level, and it’s clear that he has the support of his teammates.

Newcastle could once again be a candidate for the Carabao Cup
Newcastle looked in good form to beat a strong Brentford side, and players like Tonali and Gordon could surely turn this side into Carabao Cup contenders this season.
NUFC notably reached the final of this competition in 2022/23, losing to Manchester United on that occasion, but they will no doubt be desperate to get their hands on the silverware, and look good enough to do so .
It hasn’t been the most consistent season for Howe, but they have shown how good they can be on their day, and a cup competition may appeal to them more than the pursuit of a top-four finish in the Premier League.
