Announced the new Ryder Cup place – 6 things you should know

Rumored for a long time that it is in consideration – even reported by A Spanish news organization Last October – Camiral Golf and Wellness, a resort in the Catalonian region of Spain, will host the event six years from now. And while this can feel like the remote future, there is still many contexts surrounding the decision. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Spain has been waiting for a long time

It was more than a decade ago now that Spain was in serious consideration to host the 2022 Ryder Cup – pushed in 2023 by Pandemia – but was beaten by that honor by the Italian offer. Instead, Rome hosted the Ryder Cup, famously acquired by the Euro to Marco Simone.

Now, many years later, Spain finally has its place in the calendar. It will be the second Spanish Cup Ryder, the first to come in 1997 in Valderramma, a controversial match that Europe won 14.5-13.5.

The DP World Tournament has historically announced the next pages of RC eight years ago, so Spain has long waited for the announcement.

2. I never heard of Camiral?

This can be because it is a new name in an old resort. Camiral was once known as PGA Catalunya before being renamed under new ownership. Don’t worry, it’s not new for competition. The course has been waiting for a small part of Spanish opening (2000, 2009, 2014), the last phase of the DPWT Q school for eight years and the 2022 Catalan championship. Similar to Marco Simone waiting Italian Open in the years before Ryder Cup, Camiral will host the newly resurrected Catalon championship in 2028, 2029 and 2030.

3. Global, global, global

The biggest event in Golf has been growing for decades, and a direct decision has been more noticeable than any other: the governing bodies want the event near some of the largest cities in the world. After visiting Rome, this year’s cup is only outside the New York City. A short departure will take place in Ireland and Minnesota before returning strong with Barcelona (2031), San Francisco (2033) and Washington DC (2037). The 2035 Ryder Cup has not yet been given, but various projects built for both London and Manchester have expressed interest in reception.

4. Who put the money?

Maybe more than anything else, the Ryder Cup has become big money. How they behave money and split, has been a dot of quarrels in recent years. And the involvement of local governments and sponsors involved has been a major part of Ryder Cup’s business. Do not look more than 40 million euros reported that the Catalan government was expected to contribute, and also issuing the notice:

5. Sergio Garcia for Captain?

All natural signs would show that Garcia was the European captain for the second Cup of Spain, just like Seve Ballesteros caught the euro the Spanish hosted in 1997. But even because he would be 51 years old at the point, removed from his competitive days, and still one of Ryder Cup’s biggest players of all time. (It would be another six years to help heal some of Garcia’s violations towards DPWT in his Liv Golf’s commitments.)

6. What else are we missing?

Initial reports about Camiral’s interest in reception included the construction of the resort a specific, third course for Ryder Cup. But that went sideways when the Catalan government rejected the plans. On the contrary, it sounds like the Ryder Cup will have a composite course between the two property, the stadium and the tour course. Which holes will be used remains to be seen. It was not included as part of the announcement by Ryder Cup Comms, but this is okay. We have six years to understand them all.
