2024 professional golf season without the revival of fan favorite Andrew “Beef” Johnstonand we are all better for it. Look no further than a recent interview with DP World Tourwhere Beef shared an epic story of trying to out-drink (and out-drink) the golf legend John Daly.

Johnston burst onto the scene in 2016 when his first win at the Open de Espana sparked a hot streak, leading to his first PGA Tour card in 2017. The Englishman quickly endeared himself to golf fans thanks to his humor easy and pleasing to the personality.

A combination of injuries and poor play took Beef out of the public consciousness for several years, but 2024 saw him re-enter the top 100 in the Race to Dubai rankings. He earned his best result in a long time at the Omega European Masters in July, where he finished sole third.

On Tuesday, DP World Tour released a lengthy interview with Johnston on YouTube as part of their “Life on Tour” series with host George Harper Jr. and John E. Morgan.

And at the end of the meeting, Beef got to the good stuff. When asked if he had any good Daly stories to share, he offered one for the ages.

The incident happened a few years ago at the Turkish Airlines Open, where Beef met Daly for the first time. After Sunday’s final round, the two larger-than-life players met for a beer, and it quickly turned into a serious drinking exhibition, as Johnston recounted in the interview.

“We had a conversation and I was having a beer, and he said, ‘we’re going to get a bucket of these beers.’ And obviously he was straight into the whiskey,” Johnston said. “And he said ‘look, go back to the hotel and come meet me and we’ll carry on’.”

It was when the two pro players met later that the adventure began to go off the rails, thanks in large part to the full glasses of whiskey Daly was ordering for them.

“I remember sitting down… and he ordered like two large whiskeys. And he has the Coke can on his side. As the waiter set them down, (Daly) went, ‘can we order two more?’

A shocked Johnston replied, “Dude, they just came!”

Trying to keep up with Daly eventually got the best of the beef.

“Next, I’m in my pants, and I’m swinging a tree, and then I’m jumping in the pool, and I think, ‘He looks good! I’m not, he looks fine!’” explained Beef.

“And I wake up and I’m like ‘what happened?’ And my missus at the time was like, ‘yeah, you stripped down to your pants, and you were shaking this bush for some reason, and you kind of jumped in the pool.'”

When Beef asked what happened to Daly, he was told, surprisingly, that he was fine and had just returned to his hotel at the end of the night.
