An inspirational champion, green jacket appearances, Trump’s golf dig

Hello friends and happy Zozo Championship week (AKA the house of Tiger Woods’ most recent PGA Tour win) for all those watching! I haven’t traveled for work in over a month and it’s been great to get all of this fall in New England has to offer while simultaneously following all things golf very closely on my phone. While the golf season itself may be winding down, there has been no shortage of healthy, viral and hilarious golf moments over the past week.

Let’s start things off with the useful stuff.

Best thing I saw last week

Steven “Spud” Alderson became the first golfer with autism to win on the “G4D” (Golf for People with Disabilities) Tour, which starts in 2022. Following his win at the G4D Tour @ Estrella Damm NA Andalucía Masters , the 44-year-old gave an emotional and inspiring interview, which you can watch below.

Host Hope Barnett provided some more information on the G4D tournament as well as Alderson’s win.

Alderson will introduce him next at the G4D Final @ DP World Tour Championship in Dubai next month, and if you’re looking for a new favorite to root for, this is your guy.

College Game Day and Green Jacket appearances

I’ve said it a few hundred times and I’ll say it again: I’m not a soccer girl. I have tried time and time again to get into it. I read (and annotated) the first few chapters of Football for Dummies, asked question after question while the games were going on, and watched a handful of NFL games. I just can’t get myself excited about, or even remotely interested in, football. It was on TV all weekend at my parents’ house and I managed to tune in to every bit of it.

However, when I learned this Scottie Scheffler was going to be on College GameDay on Saturday, I knew I had to buckle down. At least I could look at it, right? The right. I’ll admit it was tricky not knowing what time Scheffler would be on (shout out to my colleague and friend Zephyr Melton for letting me know his segment would be the last), but other than that, I loved it many tuning in to the first College Games Day.

Scheffler wasn’t asked about winning the Masters or his historic PGA Tour season, but he was asked about his arrest in Louisville, and he handled it perfectly.

I see a future where the two-time Masters champion hosts Saturday Night Live.

One of my favorite things about Scheffler is that his main gripe with prison is that it was boring. That’s exactly how he explained it to Pat McAfee on Saturday in Texas, and I think it’s such a funny sight. Sure, some people think golf is boring. But have you tried sitting in jail? This is it ORDER worse. Never change, Scheffler.

Seeing Scheffler rock the green jacket at his alma mater got me thinking about the best green jacket looks I’ve seen over the years, and people were very opinionated about it on Twitter.

I think Sergio wearing the green jacket at his wedding takes the cake. Some people online called it unpleasant. The good news is that those people will never get the chance to wear the green jacket at their wedding (or anywhere else). I ranked Scheffler’s green jacket look on College GameDay as the no. 2, but the truth is, I had forgotten about the time Tiger wore it to The Woods Jupiter restaurant in his gym clothes in 2019.

I think the truth of the matter is that any appearance of the green jacket is going to be cool.

Golf insults

I’m always looking for new ways to (joke!) my friends’ golf games. Going after their handicap index is no fun. There are only so many 3-shot jokes to be made. Driving distance digs are good, but always expected. Just when my rolodex of golfing insults was getting overstuffed and tired, Donald Trump brought a new one to my attention.

“Really slow club speed.” Not only will I be adding it to my list of golf insults, but I’m also inspired to casually throw that line around like Trump did above. There’s a good lesson here, friends: You can make fun of your friend’s golf game even if it’s not the actual topic at hand. Do with that fun revelation what you will.
