Alex Yee will make his marathon debut in London

The Olympic triathlete and reigning world champion will compete over 26.2 miles in the British capital for the first time next year.

Alex Yee will make his debut over 26.2 miles at next year’s TCS London Marathon.

The 26-year-old, who is an Olympian and reigning world champion in triathlon, will be part of the elite field in the British capital.

Yi had a remarkable 2024 season, culminating in two individual triathlon gold medals on the world stage.

The first was at the Paris Olympics, where the British literally turned on the turbo-boosters; chasing down New Zealand’s Hayden Wild in the closing stages.

It seemed that Yi would have to settle for one more silver; three years ago he finished second to Christian Blumenfelt in Tokyo, but overtook Wilde with just a few corners left on the Paris course.

Then back in October, Britain In the finals of the World Triathlon Championship in Andalucia, Spain, he secured the first world crown.

After missing out on the top of the world podium in both 2022 and 2023, the win this time around was even more special for Yi.

Now, looking ahead to 2025, he looks forward to a new challenge.

“London was a no-brainer for me,” Yi said. “It’s a place that gave me a lot as a kid, and I remember running the mini-marathon a few times. It’s one of my biggest and most exciting races of the year was

“As the London Marathon looms large in my life, I’d like to come back and race well here. The marathon has always been an itch I’ve wanted to scratch and there’s nowhere else I’d rather start that journey.”

It’s safe to say that Yi has a running pedigree, boasting personal bests of 13:26 and 27:51.94 in the 5km and 10,000m respectively.

He is also 14th for Great Britain over 10,000m at the 2018 European Championships in Berlin.

Yee is one of six nominees, along with Olympic 800m champion Keeley Hodgkinson, for tomorrow’s BBC Sports Person of the Year.

The data behind the run

Alex Yee’s Race Predictor estimates a 2:13 marathon time in London. he targets somewhere between 2:07 and 2:10 at the start of his training.

The Briton, who normally runs around 60 miles a week for a triathlon, should increase that to 90 miles for marathon training.

Yee’s tools of choice will be COROS HR monitor and the new one PACE PRO CHORUS: as he prepares for the 26.2 mile journey.

“I think as the sessions get more intense and longer, I’ll focus more on my HR to make sure I’m in the right zone when training, so the COROS heart rate monitor is important,” Yi added.

“As for my training week, it will still be structured as it has been, although there will be a conscious shift to running more volume and doing longer marathon-specific sessions.

“I’ll continue to swim and ride because this will be part of my core aerobics. It’s all brand new, so things will probably evolve as we go and see how I adapt, but I’m excited to see what does that mean?”
