Lucas Boyé’s late heroics earned Alavés a spectacular 2-2 draw against Girona, securing a shared point in a thrilling La Liga battle.
Lucas Boyé’s second goal of the game rescued a vital point for Alaves in a captivating 2-2 draw against Girona. The Argentinian striker’s 89th-minute equalizer closed out a back-and-forth game at the Estadio Mendizorrotza.
Going into the game, both teams were looking to improve their position in the League. Alaves, 15th with 26 points, has tried to distance itself from the relegation zone. Meanwhile, Girona, 13th, with 29 points, hoped to climb to the top half of the table.
The match broke out almost immediately. Alavés took an early lead in the 5th minute when Lucas Boyé expertly finished from close range. He converted a well-placed assist from Yusi, sending the home crowd into raptures.
Girona, however, responded calmly and began to control possession. They patiently built, looking for an opening. Their persistent efforts paid off just after the half-hour mark, showing their resilience.
In the 31st minute, Vladyslav Vanat equalized for Girona. He took advantage of an intelligent pass from Axel Witsel, who calmly scored the ball in front of the Alaves goalkeeper. The score was 1-1 at the end of the first half.
Both coaches would have urged their teams to find another team during the interval. Girona, with superior possession, sought to convert control into more goals. Alavés sought to rediscover their early offensive spark and defensive solidity.
The second half began with continued intensity. Alaves’ Yusi was booked for holding an opponent very soon after the restart in the 50th minute. Girona made tactical changes to boost their attack, bringing in fresh legs around the hour mark, including Azzedine Ounahi.
The visitors’ persistence paid off in the 73rd minute. Viktor Tsygankov sent Girona ahead with a clinical strike, after a strong assist from substitute Ounahi. Girona now held a valuable 2-1 advantage, momentarily silencing the local fans.
Alavés refused to give up, pushing forward with determination. They introduced their own attacking substitutions, desperate to find an equaliser. The pressure mounted on the Girona defence, which picked up yellow cards for fouls in quick succession.
Just when it seemed that Girona would claim the three points, Alaves found a late breakthrough. Lucas Boyé went forward again in the 89th minute and scored his second goal of the day. He connected with Víctor Parada’s crucial assist, ensuring a spectacular finish and a shared result.
The statistics highlighted Girona’s slight advantage in expected goals (xG 2.22 to Alavés 1.87), reflecting controlled possession (55%). However, Alavés created more total shots, firing 17 attempts to Girona’s 10, showing their attacking intent at all times.
With this hard-fought 2-2 draw, both Alavés and Girona added a point to the League. Alavés will take confidence from their energetic late comeback, while Girona will regret letting a winning position slip away in the final minutes.
