Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati has won her second consecutive Women’s Ballon d’Or, after picking up the award in both 2023 and 2024.
The Catalan star retains the most coveted football prize after an immense campaign with Barcelona: winning the club’s fifth successive Liga F title and lifting the Champions League trophy. Her success saw her beat teammates Caroline Graham Hansen and Alexia Putellas, as well as Khadija Shaw and Lucy Bronze to be crowned the best female player in world football.
Bonmati’s success also sees it follow in the footsteps of Barcelona and fellow Spaniard Putellas, who won the award in 2021 and 2022.
Although Spain failed to medal at this summer’s Olympics, Bonmati played a starring role in their UEFA Nations League glory. Her performances both at the club and in the country saw her rewarded with a new contract with Barcelona, which he wrote in September.
2024 marked the fourth year in a row that a Spanish player has won the Women’s Ballon d’Or, after Putella and Bonmati won back-to-back awards. The trophy was only awarded for the first time in 2018, with Ada Hegerberg as the inaugural recipient before USWNT legend Megan Rapinoe picked it up a year later.
The 26-year-old has already enjoyed a strong start to the 2024/25 campaign, scoring three goals in five games. Barcelona are currently at the top of Liga F, far behind rivals Real Madrid.
