Preparations for Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR). IPL 2026 they got another big hit with the pacer Akash Deep officially ruled out the entire season. The 29-year-old became the second Indian fast bowler to be dismissed after that Harshit RanaThe three-time champions are struggling to rekindle their pace attack just days before their opening match.
The franchise confirmed the development via an official update, ending any hopes of his return this season. “Unfortunately he is out of the IPL, out for the season” A KKR official said.
Akash Deep is understood to be suffering from a stress reaction in his lower back – an injury that usually requires eight to twelve weeks of recovery time. The problem reportedly surfaced in Bengal’s Ranji Trophy semi-final earlier this year, where he failed to play with full intensity.
Since then, he has not joined KKR’s pre-season camp and is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Center of Excellence in Bangalore. The injury not only rules him out of the IPL but also raises concerns about his availability for India’s upcoming international assignments.
It is a significant blow for KKR. Akash Deep was expected to bolster the domestic pace options after being selected in the auction and his absence leaves a glaring void in the squad.
Bowling crisis looms but KKR hopeful
Akash Deep’s injury adds to the growing list of concerns for KKR’s bowling unit. Rana has already been ruled out of surgery due to a knee injury Matheesha Pathirana He is set to miss the first matches as he recovers from a calf strain. To make matters worse, Mustafizur Rahman is no longer part of the squad as per BCCI directive.
With several key pacers unavailable, KKR’s bowling attack looks considerably weakened heading into the season opener against Mumbai Indians on March 29.
However, the mentor Dwayne Bravo remains optimistic and believes the team has enough depth to handle the situation.
“In any tournament that any team is in, when you lose some of your key bowling options, those aren’t things you plan for, but they’re things you have to accept.” Bravo said. “The good thing about Indian cricket, especially at the moment, is that there is a lot of depth. You have the likes of Umran Malik, Karthik Tyagi, Vaibhav Arora… they are young, exciting talents.”
Bravo also pointed to KKR’s strong spin department as a key strength, suggesting the team could maintain balance despite setbacks.
“We’ve got the best spin attack in the whole competition, so from a bowling point of view I think we’ll be fine.” he added.

Among them, Madhwal looks like a strong contender thanks to his impressive performances in previous IPL seasons, including a memorable five-wicket haul in the knockout game.
Head coach Abhishek Nayar A decision is imminent, which is expected to be announced before the team leaves for Mumbai, he said.
While the injury crisis has undoubtedly disrupted KKR’s plans, the franchise is looking to adapt quickly. With a mix of experienced players and emerging talent, they will aim to overcome these challenges and start the IPL 2026 campaign on a strong note.
For now, it’s a test of durability – and how well KKR can turn their season around.
