- LAB Golf introduces their new putting models OZ.1 and OZ.1i.
- The OZ.1i is the first LAB golf with a single insert.
- The OZ.1i will be available in December with the OZ.1 following in January.
Let’s get something out of the way. The release of LAB Golf OZ1.1 and OZ.1i has nothing to do with the release of Wicked in theaters this week. I’m sure LAB Golf doesn’t mind the publicity generated by the inadvertent crossover, but neither Munchkins nor flying monkeys were involved in the production of these paws.
Yeah, that makes me a little sad. Don’t worry. I’ll be sure not to rust myself up.
Instead, the inspiration for the new LAB Golf OZ head design came from the extremely handsome and very Australian golfer Adam Scott.
Scott made the transition to a LAB Golf long putter in 2023. Since then, he’s collaborated with the team at LAB to come up with the putter you’re looking at today.
“We have always challenged ourselves to develop players that resonate with world-class players while retaining all the performance benefits of Lie Angle Balance. Working with Adam Scott was an inspiring and rewarding process for our team and provided invaluable insight into the nuances of form, feel, sound and performance from one of the most experienced and respected players on the PGA Tour. Sam Hahn, CEO of LAB Golf
What is this, a man or a melon?
The new OZ head shape is by no means a classic putter shape, but this kind of atypical architecture is exactly what players have come to expect from LAB Golf. The golf consumer knows these unusual designs pack a punch.
Once upon a time, we might have dismissed this design as a “plate on a pole,” but we, the golf public, know that the LAB Golf madness contains magic. Just because the horse is a different color doesn’t mean it can’t gallop.
Insert insert here
The LAB Golf OZ.1 has all the angles and edges we expect a Golf LAB gauge to have, but also has an unexpected stainless steel face insert. The inclusion of the insert is a first for a LAB golf putter.
Outside of the insert, the OZ.1 and OZ.1i are built to the same specifications. The choice of face configuration depends on personal need.
Are you struggling with the putts leading up to February? Maybe that extra stainless steel pop-pop will provide the heat you need to hit the hole. If you want something softer, go with the classic aluminum version.
0° press axis option? Oh my!
Aside from the introduction, I was surprised by another new OZ option. You can build a version of the OZ.1 or OZ.1i without the integrated front press. The LAB rats out there know this is a big deal. LAB shooters always have forward press and specialized press clips.
For the OZ.1 and OZ.1i, you can use a loose zero/vertical axis option that will then be compatible with standard handles. There will also be the typical two-step lid, but the fact that there is a vertical option is a big difference.
Like I said, this surprised me. Then you’re going to tell me that LAB Golf is making a putter that it isn’t Lie Angle Balanced.
Adam Scott Limited Edition Version OZ.1
To celebrate their collaboration, LAB Golf is releasing a limited edition version of the OZ.1: Emerald Kingdom green with an exclusive geometric POLY ROO design on the sole.
The pack features 32 LAB Golf logos to celebrate Scott’s PGA Tour victories. A fleece-lined Seamus Golf fleece will keep your bag warm this winter.
This version is available now at labgolf.com with an MSRP of $1,750.
Release schedule for OZ.1 and OZ.1i
As I mentioned, the Adam Scott version of the OZ.1 is available now. Although specific dates have not been announced, standard and custom versions of the OZ.1i will go on sale in December with an MSRP of $499 for stock and $599 for custom. Standard insertless and customized OZ.1 models will follow in January. Pricing has yet to be released for these, but should be similar to the OZ.1.
Final thoughts on the LAB Golf OZ.1 and OZ.1i
Many of you (and your little dogs too) likely have questions about OZ setters. Me too. What is the difference in feel between the new stainless steel insert and the aluminum model? How does the zero degree shaft position change how the putter plays? Who is the hottest Australian, Adam Scott or Hugh Jackman?
Outside of the last question, Hugh Jackman, I have no answer for you. I expect we’ll learn more about these in the coming months. Hopefully, I can get you some first-hand information about the difference in feel, the playing effect of the shaft league change, and the custom options.
As we’ve already seen, 2025 will be the year other companies try to steal the zero-torque ruby slippers from LAB Golf. The OZ line shows us that LAB Golf is still trying to be great and mighty in the sportsman’s realm and that you better pay attention to the man behind the curtain.
