A simple key to hitting high, soft bunker shots

Want to hit those high shots, the bunker with soft soil, which you see test? Theelli is not to make a detailed change of swinging. All you need is a simple configuration adjustment.

Here, I would break down an ordinary mistake I see from amateurs in the sand, and give you a slight checkpoint that will immediately increase your performance in these shots.

A common mistake I see in bunker shooting is players using a spine that reflects their full activity. This puts the club in what I call a “strong position”, where the grooves face sand. From here, it is difficult to add the attic, which forces the players to fight, turn back or manipulate the face-heading into unstable contact and low shots.

In the photo below (left), you can see that the club is closed while the player gets their club again. This makes the ball low (photo down to the right), under the top of the trees in the distance – not what we want.

On the contrary, let’s get to the root cause: backswing. To be an elite bunker player, you need an open face on your back in order to grow the attic and send the ball up. I like to give my players a simple checkpoint to help them know if they are being placed properly.

Open your club in configuration

To fix this, your “checkpoint” is to ensure that Clubface is open in configuration.

Just rotate the club, so the grooves show towards the sky. This will increase your attic, setting you to start it up from the sand. This arrangement naturally frees your rhythm as well, encouraging you to make a complete and dedicated movement.

Once you have used this simple checkpoint, note how the face angle is more open in the photo above and the ball now reaches the tip of the tree line in the distance – executed as a professional.
