South Africa vs Canada Full Match Recap

Stephen Eustáquio scored a stunning stoppage-time volley as Canada beat South Africa 1-0 to reach the last 16 of the World Cup for the first time in their history.

In a tie bursting with tension at the SoFi Stadium, the co-hosts dominated the chances but had to wait until the 92nd minute to break a stubborn Bafana Bafana resistance.

Jesse Marsch’s side came out with intent, their pressure relentless from the first whistle. With the same line-up that looked tentative in the opener against Bosnia-Herzegovina, Canada came out with more fight and their press bordered on the manic.

South Africa, however, refused to be rushed. The South Africans, who upset South Korea in the group stage by playing counter-attacking football, managed the pressure and slowly slowed the game down, doing it all with rhythmic composure.

Canada’s best opening of the first half came just before the break. Their best chance came from a corner, when Moïse Bombito’s header was cleared off the line, and Tajon Buchanan’s follow-up was smartly saved by Ronwen Williams.

Aubrey Modiba’s goal-line clearance and a string of saves from Williams kept the deadlock intact as South Africa’s hard-hitting backline weathered wave after wave of pressure.

The second half brought more Canadian threat.

Canada went close in the 63rd minute on a break led by substitute Niko Sigur, who fed Tani Oluwaseyi, whose shot was saved by Williams before Mbekezeli Mbokazi cleared the ball away from Jonathan David.

Then Marsch rolled the dice with his bank. He called on waves of substitutes, including Alphonso Davies, making his first appearance for the national team in more than a year, and Eustaquio took off the armband and handed it to Davies.

South Africa offered little going forward, their only real chance falling to Oswin Appollis, whose effort from distance drew a diving save from Maxime Crépeau.

As extra time approached, the breakthrough came. Jacob Shaffelburg’s cross was headed by a South African defender, but the ball fell straight to Eustaquio, who placed it and hit Williams with a right-footed shot.

It was a fitting finish to settle any occasion. It was Eustaquio who took his team to the round of 16, with a perfect volley from outside the box.

The numbers underscored Canada’s superiority.

Canada had the lion’s share of the big moments, outshooting South Africa 12-6, and despite having just 42 percent of the possession, had 28 touches in the box to just nine for South Africa.

For Hugo Broos and South Africa, it was a heartbreaking end to a historic campaign that had already exceeded expectations after reaching the knockout stage for the first time.
