Bob Arum says Floyd Mayweather ‘ran out’ after believing he was a financial genius

Promoter Bob Arum believes Floyd Mayweather’s lavish lifestyle, not a lack of career earnings, explains why the undefeated former five-division world champion continues to take exhibition bouts.

Asked about Mayweather after his planned exhibition in Greece was cancelled, Arum expressed sympathy before arguing that extravagant spending had finally caught up with his former fighter.

“It’s very, very sad, but Floyd had a great career. He made a lot of money, but in his mind it made him a great genius, great business genius, great genius in life. And because he overestimated life, he ran out of money,” Arum told Fight Hub TV about the 49-year-old Mayweather Jr.

Arum pointed to Mayweather’s expensive lifestyle as the underlying problem.

No matter how much money you have, you can’t have two big planes, 10 security guards. It’s going to cost you money. So again, I’m really sad to see it happen, but hopefully he gets out of it,” Arum said.

Arum’s comments came after Mayweather’s scheduled exhibition against Mike Zambidis in Greece was called off amid an ongoing legal dispute involving CSI Sports Events. The cancellation fueled further speculation about Mayweather’s continued reliance on exhibition fights years after he retired from professional boxing.

The 49-0 former champion reportedly earned hundreds of millions of dollars during his Hall of Fame career, but Arum suggested even those earnings could disappear when spending continues at an extraordinary level. His next exhibition now remains uncertain amid ongoing legal disputes.
