Conor Benn’s manager, Keith Connolly, says Benn has already signed up for a proposed September showdown with Ryan Garcia and believes an official announcement could be imminent.
The fight has been the subject of constant speculation for weeks, with reports linking the two to a September 12 clash. While questions remain about broadcast arrangements and promotional issues, Connolly indicated that progress has been made behind the scenes.
“We’ve signed on our end. I think Ryan has accepted that as well. I think they’re working out some issues with the networks. I don’t really want to talk about it. It’s a different area. I’ve got my guy signed for the fight and ready to go, and I think we’ll hear some positive news in the next couple of weeks,” Connolly told Ring Magazine.
The comments come amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding the event. Golden Boy Promotions previously raised objections to Ryan’s involvement in a fight outside of its promotional structure, while questions also surrounded the broadcast platform.
When asked if a television deal had been finalized, Connolly declined to discuss the matter, reiterating that his focus is on Benn being ready for the fight.
Benn (25-1, 14 KOs) last fought on April 11, defeating Regis Prograis by unanimous decision over 10 rounds at a Zuffa event in London. Ryan was last in action on February 21 when he defeated WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios.
While questions remain over the broadcast arrangements of the event, Connolly’s comments suggest that both fighters have moved significantly closer to finalizing the fight. An announcement may follow if the remaining issues are resolved in the coming weeks.
