Fred Curley’s flexibility was at its peak in 2024
Fred Curley’s 2024 season has been a whirlwind of challenges, both personal and professional, that could easily derail his Olympic dreams. Entering the Paris Olympics, Curley was far from his peak form. With his personal best of 9.76s in the 100m seemingly out of reach, and a highly publicized clash with his sponsor ASICS, many doubted whether he could recover. His decision to wear Nike spikes despite being signed to ASICS resulted in his sponsorship deal being terminated at the worst possible time, right in the middle of the Olympic season.
Despite these setbacks, Curley’s confidence remained unwavering. In May, he boldly tweeted: Although that world record fell short, Kerley’s confidence signaled that she was not ready to take a back seat. He was determined to prove that the obstacles he faced would not define his season.
Curley’s career has always been characterized by versatility and energy. He is the only person in history to win the Wanda Diamond League events in the 100m, 200m and 400m. In 2022, he became the 100m world champion on home soil in Oregon, just three years after winning bronze in the 400m at the World Championships in Doha. With personal bests of 9.76 in the 100m, 19.76 in the 200m and 43.64 in the 400m, he belongs to an exclusive sub-10, sub-20, 44 club that highlights his extraordinary sprint range.
However, as 2024 progressed, inconsistency plagued Curley’s performances, and many doubted he would even make the US Olympic team. However, Curley thrives under pressure. When the U.S. Olympic Trials arrived, he dug deep, overcoming doubters to secure his spot on the team headed to Paris as he finished third behind Noah Lyles and Kenny Bednarek.
At the Paris Olympics, Curley had a remarkable performance, securing the bronze medal in the 100m. While it wasn’t the gold medal or world record she once envisioned, her podium finish was a testament to her resilience. In a season filled with uncertainty and obstacles, Curley reminded the world that you can’t just write him off, no matter the circumstances.
Curley’s 2024 season may not have been perfect, but it showed his unyielding spirit. Winning bronze in the 100m at the Paris Olympics was more than just a medal, it was proof that Curley could rise to the challenge and still be among the best in the world.
