There’s just one round left in the 2026 US Open, and from the looks of the leaderboard at the 54-hole mark, we’re in one of two scenarios: a grand coronationor utter chaos and carnage.
Let’s break it all down. Here are five things you need to know about Sunday in the Shinnecock.
leader
Over the last three rounds, Wyndham Clark hasn’t taken his foot off the gas pedal. The 32-year-old is seven under par and has opened a six-shot lead with one round remaining at Shinnecock. Sunday’s round represents a chance to add a second US Open title to the first he claimed in 2023 at Los Angeles Country Club. A win on Sunday would also mark the culmination of the heat for Clark, who has finished 1-3-T11 in his last three starts.
Story about Scottie?
Among Clark’s closest competitors at a lower level is world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. While a six-shot deficit is a daunting hill to climb on Sunday, there is an important story awaiting Scheffler if he can pull it off. The US Open would not only mark Scheffler’s fifth career major, but also complete the career Grand Slam, just four years after his first Masters win in 2022.
A record comeback?
How likely is it that someone can overcome Clark? Arnold Palmer brilliantly came from seven shots to take the 1960 US Open title at Cherry Hills. Johnny Miller overcame a six-shot deficit at Oakmont in 1973 with a final-round 63. There are currently eight players within seven shots of Clark’s lead, two of whom have previously won a major: Scheffler (-1) and Xander Schauffele (E).
What about Rory?
Rory McIlroy made a fiery first half of his third round on Saturday, posting three consecutive birdies on holes 5, 6 and 7. But he was sunk by a back nine of 40 that included five bogeys. At three shots adrift and 10 shots behind Clark, it would take more than a few miraculous events to get McIlroy back in the mix this championship.
One last epic pairing
Clark and Scheffler will play together in Sunday’s final doubles at 2:30 p.m. ET. Who will emerge victorious? The day seems destined for drama. Don’t miss it! Click here for everything you need to know to watch the final round action at the 2026 US Open.
