England could get a boost in time before the crucial third Test against New Zealandwith Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson they are preparing to return after being freed from themselves District championship at the request of fixtures England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Their withdrawals have raised expectations that both players will be available for selection when the teams meet at Trent Bridge later this week.
The action then comes to the deciding stage of the series England’s heavy 253-run defeat in the second Test At The Oval, a result that allowed New Zealand to level the contest 1-1 and set up a winner-takes-all final.
County performances strengthen selection status for Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson
Stokes turned out for Durham against Northamptonshire and looked promising in his brief appearance. The all-rounder compiled an impressive 95 with the bat, just short of a century, while also putting in a significant workload with the ball, taking 25 deliveries and a wicket.
His performance showed that he is fit enough to make an immediate impact if recalled to the national team. Given England’s struggles in the second Test, Stokes’ experience and ability to influence matches across multiple disciplines could be invaluable.
Atkinson also made the most of the Glamorgan clash for Surrey. The fast bowler picked up four wickets and displayed the sharpness that has made him one of England’s most promising seam options in recent months. His ability to generate pace and movement could add much-needed firepower to England’s bowling attack at Trent Bridge.
The ECB’s decision to withdraw both players before the end of the county matches is seen as preparation for international duty rather than a regular workload management measure.
The curfew investigation remains unsolved
Neither Stokes nor Atkinson were considered for the second Test at The Oval after the ECB began investigating an allegation of team curfew violations following England’s opening Test win at Lord’s.
The governing body has not yet released the results of that investigation to the public, and reports indicate that the investigation is still ongoing. Despite the lack of an official result, recent developments suggest that the pair are fighting hard to get back into the Test set-up.
Their omission was notable, especially as England fielded a significantly changed line-up that featured five changes from the side that won the series opener. A rejuvenated team struggled to match New Zealand’s consistency and eventually suffered a convincing defeat.
England are looking for reinforcements in time for the series final
With the series wrapped up, England will be keen to regain balance and experience ahead of the final encounter. Stokes’ leadership qualities, batting stamina and bowling versatility could provide a huge boost, while Atkinson’s wicketkeeping ability gives the pace attack an added advantage.
The defeat at The Oval exposed a number of weaknesses in England’s unity and made the possible return of two proven performers particularly important. Their recent county displays have also eased concerns about match preparation, suggesting they could go straight into the playing XI if selected.
An official squad announcement is expected before the start of Thursday’s Trent Bridge Test, but the ECB’s decision to release both players from county duties gave a strong indication that England are set to get Stokes and Atkinson back as the all-important decider.
