In the opening rounds, Vargas tried to establish his jab and use his size advantage, but Rodriguez quickly found his rhythm. The San Antonio native consistently beat Vargas by creating angles and landing crisp combinations while avoiding lengthy exchanges.
As the fight progressed, Rodriguez’s speed and accuracy began to separate him from the defending champion. Vargas showed toughness and remained competitive in spots, but he struggled to handle Rodriguez’s timing and ability to attack from different positions.
Rodriguez produced the decisive moment in the fifth round when he dropped Vargas with a heavy shot that visibly shifted the momentum further in his favor. Vargas got up to continue, but the punishment took its toll.
The end came in Round 6. Rodriguez unleashed another sharp combination, punctuated by a powerful right hand that left Vargas unable to continue. Referee intervention followed soon after, officially awarding Rodriguez a technical knockout victory.
The victory improved Rodriguez’s record to 24-0 with 17 knockouts and cemented his status as one of boxing’s elite fighters. Rodriguez moved up from super flyweight to a 118-pound title and handled the transition with ease against a champion making the first defense of his WBA crown.
Vargas, who entered the bout with a 19-2-1 record after retaining the title in a draw against Daigo Higa, showed determination throughout but could not match Rodriguez’s superior skills and finishing ability.
For Rodriguez, the win opens the door to several big opportunities at bantamweight, including potential unification fights against the division’s other titleholders. A future move to super bantamweight could also bring additional high-profile bouts as he continues to build one of the strongest resumes in the sport.
On this night, however, Rodriguez only needed six rounds to prove that he can carry success in another weight class. Against Vargas, “Bam” delivered the type of clinical performance expected of a pound-for-pound talent operating at the peak of his powers.
