A proposed showdown between John Fury and Carl Froch failed to get off the ground because the money on offer fell far short of Fury’s expectations.
Froch, a former unified super middleweight world champion, had previously entertained the idea of stepping back into the limelight for the right opportunity. One of the names linked to a potential crossover fight was Tyson Fury’s outspoken father John.
Fury revealed today that negotiations broke down because the financial terms offered did not meet his expectations.
“I’m interested in anybody. Ask them. £2.5m sterling didn’t come back to me,” John Fury told Pro Boxing Fans.
“He offered me a million kwek. Time I paid taxes and everybody else, it’s not enough. It’s not enough, mate.”
Fury insisted that financial considerations are not driven by necessity, but by what he believes he brings to an event.
“I don’t need money. You know what I need? And what I do know is worth me,” said John.
“For a man who’s just a father, I bring a lot of attention and eyes. I have to say that myself. You know why? Because I bring different things to the game.
“I’ll do anything. I’ll say anything. And nobody knows what I’m going to do. I don’t know myself until I get there.”
Froch retired from professional boxing in 2014 following his knockout victory over George Groves in front of a packed Wembley Stadium crowd. The former champion has remained a prominent voice within the sport through his podcast appearances and media work.
Although Fury’s latest comments suggest that negotiations over money have stalled, he stopped short of ruling the contest out completely. Any meeting between the two outspoken figures seems to depend on whether a promoter is willing to bridge the gap between what has been offered and what Fury believes the fight is worth.
