Here is a list of athletes that UK Athletics is supporting to fight for podium places in the future
Keeley Hodgkinson, Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Matt Hudson-Smith are among 65 athletes who have received lottery funding for Great Britain’s Olympic World Class Athletics program over the next 12 months ahead of the World Championships in Tokyo.
This follows the Paris Olympics, where the British team won 10 medals, their best since 1984.
The program is divided into four different levels of support: Podium, Podium Potential, Transfer and Confirmation, with the aim of helping athletes that the governing body believes can win medals at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics or in 2032.
Notable names not included in this coming year’s lists include Eilish McColgan, Scott Lincoln, Lizzie Bird, Callum Wilkinson, Lawrence Okoye, Nick Percy and Elliott Giles.
Steeplechaser Bird is now pursuing a legal career after climbing to the European podium in Rome and breaking the British Olympic record, while there have also been post-Olympic retirees such as Holly Bradshaw, Andy Posey, Jesse Knight and Jodie Williams. .
“Athletics has brought back 10 medals from the world stage two years in a row and this investment is key to that,” said Paula Dunn, head Olympic coach. “I think we’ve shown as a sport that we’re putting these investments in the right areas and we look forward to confirming our investment in Los Angeles later this year.
“For those athletes who have dropped out of the program or haven’t completed the program today, it doesn’t mean they won’t be successful in the future, it’s just that the WCP selection parameters are very specific and they’re not realistic right now. . Everyone who wears the GB & NI vest should be proud of their achievements, we are, and we will continue to see where we can add value, support and guidance to individuals who do not currently meet WCP standards.”
