In Lexington, Samuel Ogazi begins another announcement to Eugene
Samuel Ogazi is making the NCAA 400m her personal space this season.
Every time he steps on the track, it feels like everyone is rooting for the rhythm, confidence and authority he now brings to the event.
The feeling followed him Lexington, Kentuckyfor NCAA East Regionalswhere the Alabama junior began his comeback to defend his NCAA championship title. In the first round of the men’s 400m, Ogazi went about his business with ease, coming out with purpose, controlling his race and crossing the line in 44.6 seconds to win his heat and safely advance to the next stage.
He was followed by Penn State’s Jake Palermo in 45.25 to finish second and Columbia’s Hayden Brotchi in third in 45.57, both athletes also securing automatic qualifications. It was hot on paper and Ogazi made it look like a controlled move on a much bigger trip. He ran like a man with bigger things ahead of him, and that’s perhaps the clearest sign of where he is right now in the NCAA 400m picture.
For many athletes, running 44.61 at this stage of the season would be a major statement. For Ogazi, it seemed like business done right. The job was to qualify, stay calm, keep the body fresh and get one step closer to Eugene, where the national title will be decided in June.
“I’m glad I got through the first round without too much trouble,” Ogazi said. “Topping the NCAA has given me the confidence to go through my rounds with ease and without pressure, and I will try to reach the NCAA finals and claim another title.”
That confidence was built over a season that saw Ogazi go from a talented quarter-miler to one of the biggest names in college track and field. His 43.95 seconds at the SEC Championships was the kind of run that changed the way people looked at him. It gave him the SEC title, put him at the top of the NCAA this year and confirmed that he is now the standard against which everyone measures themselves.
That run went a long way, too Alabama and: NCAA. For: Nigeria, Ogazi has become a new symbol of what the country can produce in the 400m when talent meets the right environment, competition and confidence. Earlier this season, he broke the Nigerian national record previously held by Innocent Egbunike, a mark that stood for more than three decades. Indoors, he already showed what’s to come when he clocked 44.57 to set both the African and Nigerian national records.
Ogazi looked calm and composed on opening day. He was like an athlete fully aware of the work required in the rounds. After all, this is a runner who made the finals of the Paris Olympics.
The questions will now be how fast he can go in the semifinals and whether he can make a serious shot institution record in Lexington. Deon Landor 44.36, Competing for Texas A&M remains the mark of winning at the University of Kentucky facility, and based on the way Ogazi opened his campaign, it’s easy to see why people will be watching the clock the next time he lines up.
There’s also a larger historical conversation surrounding Michael Norman’s 43.61 NCAA collegiate record set in 2018. That record still stands as one of the best marks in college track and field, and Ogazi’s 43.95 put her close enough to make the conversation real. His season has already shown that when the race is right and the moment calls for it, the time can come.
For now, the focus is clear. Go through Lexington. Book a ticket to Oregon. Defend the NCAA title. Continue to build on a season that already feels special.
