“Torrez will only be as good as his chin holds up,” Bradley said on his YouTube channel.
Bradley explained that Torrez checks almost every other box as a heavyweight prospect, but warned that once fighters reach elite-level opposition, durability becomes inevitable.
“You have to have heart and you have to have a chin. You need both,” Bradley said.
“And if you can’t take it here or take a big shot, especially in the heavyweight division, you’re screwed.”
Bradley stopped short of dismissing Torrez fully, pointing out that the knockout of Sanchez was one the undefeated American never saw coming.
“Now, I’m not saying that Torrez is defective, but that was the first right hand you got hit with,” Bradley said. “Some guys get knocked out by shots they don’t see.”
The loss also reminded fans of Torrez’s first-round knockout loss to undefeated Uzbek heavyweight Bakhodir Jalolov in the amateurs in September 2019 in Yekaterinburg, Russia. The sequence looked similar to the Sanchez loss, with Torrez charging forward aggressively before being caught cleanly by the taller southpaw and landing flat on his back.
Bradley also criticized Torrez’s aggressive approach against a dangerous puncher like Sanchez, saying the fight developed exactly as the veteran Cuban heavyweight would have liked.
“It’s dangerous to go to a puncher,” Bradley said. “You have to take your time.”
The Hall of Fame analyst added that Sanchez seemed to identify Torrez’s habits immediately and the looping right hand was a perfect fit after seeing the same openings on film.
“Nothing has changed,” Bradley said. “Same damn mistake.”
Despite the loss, Bradley still praised Torrez for his work ethic and mentality, saying the heavyweight contender remains one of the better young personalities in the division.
“He checks every other box,” Bradley said. “He’s a hard worker. He’s very disciplined. He’s a good guy. He’s a student of the game.”
Bradley said Torrez’s future could now depend on how he reacts once he starts taking clean heavyweight punches more often against experienced opposition.
