James Toney sacks Schofield against Tank Davis

James Toney doesn’t think Floyd Schofield is ready for Gervonta “Tank” Davis, and he made that clear while responding to the WBA ordering the undefeated contender to enter mandatory negotiations for Tank’s lightweight title.

Schofield Sr. recently confirmed that negotiations are underway after the WBA formally ordered the fight. However, Toney says the #1 contender is being moved too quickly against a fighter on Davis’ level.

“I don’t think he’s ready. Floyd Schofield. He’ll be knocked out,” Toney told MillCity Boxing when asked about the scheduled bout.

“Nothing. Nothing.”

Toney compared the potential fight to Tank Davis’ knockout victory over Frank Martin, and said Schofield didn’t face the kind of opposition needed before stepping into a title fight against Davis.

“He be like Frank Martin. You know what I’m saying?” Toney said of Schofield.

“I’ve never seen the kid fight before, but I can tell his trainer and his dad don’t know anything about boxing. He’s never fought anybody in light fights. He hasn’t fought anybody. He’s fought C-class fighters that are built the right way.”

Toney believes Schofield’s team are making a mistake by taking on the fight now instead of giving him more time to develop.

“He went the wrong way by fighting tank first. Like I said before, he needs time to get ready. His time is not now.”

Toney softened his stance a bit later in the interview, saying he hopes Schofield does well if the fight goes through.

“I hope the kid’s doing well. I hope he’s doing really well. But complications for Tank? No, not at all,” Toney says.
