XIAMEN (CHN, May 23). Two extraordinary performances featuring Diamond League records, area records and world leaders highlighted the Xiamen Wanda Diamond League match. In the end, Olympic 100m hurdles champion Masai Russell clocked 12.14, while 18-year-old Yang Zi had an incredible U20WR 71.74 in the women’s javelin. Both athletes achieved the second best ever marks in their disciplines and only narrowly missed the world records. Xiamen DL also set 6 more match records and 5 more world leaders (+1 tied). An appreciative crowd witnessed five consecutive victories while Shanghai’s four winners were defeated. Five premier DL winners were crowned and only two of the seven competing world champions won. At the same time, Faith Cherotic, Ditaji Kambundji, Cordell Tinch, Mattia Furlani and Ryan Kruser all lost. The next Wanda DL match is scheduled for May 31 in Rabat.

Women
200 m. Sherika Jackson improved to 21.87 (0.2), a meet record and just 0.01 off the world leader. Shauna Miller-Whibaugh was second again in 22.04, her fastest time since 2021.
1500 m. A big (and debut DL) win for Abbey Caldwell, who ran the last lap of Birk Hailom, 3:57.26 – 3:57.79, with Emily Mackay third (3:58.18). World medalists Dorcus Evoy and Jess Hull finished fourth (3:58.91) and fifth (3:58.97).
3000 m running. Back-to-back wins in the Diamond League went to Perut Chemutai, who lowered his world lead to 8:51.06, also a meet record, ahead of Winfred Yaw (8:52.53). Faith Cherotic and Marva Buzaiani also broke the 9:00 barrier, finishing third (8:52.53) and fourth (8:59.25), respectively. First km at very fast WR pace.
100 m hurdles. Just 0.02 off the world record. Olympic champion Masai Russell improved to 12.14 (0.5), missing Tobin Amusan’s world record. Second best ever: DLR, WL, MR. Amusan was second in 12.28 and Devin Charlton improved his Bahamian record to 12.37.
High jump. Yulia Levchenko cleared 1.99m on her third attempt to beat Ukrainian teammate Iryna Gerashchenko, who led with a countback of 1.97m. This was his first win in the Diamond League since 2020.
Discuss. 68.45m for Valarie Sion’s clear victory over Fen Binh (65.03m) and Jorind van Klinken (64.27m).
Javelin. The performance of the season so far. Yang Ziyi, who turned 18 yesterday, made the second-longest throw in history with the current javelin, 71.74m behind Barshpotakovasova’s world record of 72.28m from 2008. Serbia’s Adriana Vilagos (63.64m) is second and third, respectively, the best of the season.

Men
100 m. Ferdinand Omanyala made it 9.94 (0.2) to 10.00 for Gift Leotlela, his fifth sub of 2026. Trayvon Bromell finished third in 10.03.
400 m. World champion Kolen Kebinatshipi’s meeting record and world leader to record his debut DL win, ahead of Commonwealth champion Muzala Samukonga, 43.92 to 44.04.
5000 m. 2022 U20 World Champion Adisu Yihune won in what turned out to be a tactical race with a match record and world lead of 12-5. Notable DNFs included Andreas Almgren and Kuma Girma.
110 m hurdles. Diamond League wins for Jamal Britt, who clocks his fifth career time of 13.07 (0.5), ahead of Japan’s Rachid Muratake at 13.13. World champion Cordell Tinch was fifth in 13.28
400 m hurdles. Race of the meeting. Alison dos Santos makes it back-to-back wins over Karsten Warholm with a world-leading 46 Warholm’srholm time of 46.82.
Long jump. Miltiadis Tentoglu returned to his best with a meet-record 8.46m (0.0) in the third round, his longest jump outdoors this year and his best DL. Tajai Gale (8.32m/0.2) and Bozhidar Saraboykov (8.29m/0.1) are in second and third place. Mattia Furlani jumped 8.28m (0.1), but left the arena on a stretcher.
Shooting. Olympic bronze medalist Rajindra Campbell’s Jamaican record 22.34 for an outright win and MR (his first on the DL) over Americans Jordan Geist (21.52m) and Ryan Kruser (21.41m), the latter making his season debut and breaking out of the top 2 for the first time since the final round.
