Celta Vigo secured a crucial 1-0 win over Sevilla at the Estadio Abanca-Balaídos, with Ilaix Moriba’s second-half goal proving decisive in a closely contested La Liga game.
Celta de Vigo entered the game sixth in La Liga with 51 points from 37 games, while Sevilla were 13th with 43 points. The home side looked to maintain their push for European qualification, while the visitors needed points to move away from relegation trouble. Both teams arrived in inconsistent form, setting the stage for a competitive battle.
The first 45 minutes unfolded as a topsy-turvy affair with few clear-cut chances. Celta controlled 56 percent of possession but struggled to convert their dominance into meaningful opportunities. Sevilla remained compact and disciplined defensively, frustrating the home team’s attacking rhythm. The first half produced little to excite, with both goalkeepers relatively untested as the defenses held firm.
Ilaix Moriba received a yellow card in the 38th minute for a tackle that disrupted Sevilla’s rhythm. Despite the caution, the midfielder remained influential in Celta’s midfield operations. The half ended goalless, leaving everything to play for in the second period.
The second half started with a renewed intensity from the locals. Celta’s attacking approach immediately paid off when Moriba scored in the 51st minute, firing past the Sevilla goalkeeper to give his side a precious lead. The goal shifted the momentum decisively to the home side.
Sevilla responded by pushing forward in search of an equaliser. However, their efforts lacked precision and cutting edge. Celta’s defence, coordinated by Yoel Lago and Marcos Alonso, remained resolute against the visitors’ advances. Ionuț Radu made two crucial saves to preserve his team’s lead.
The visitors committed 19 fouls throughout the game, reflecting their desperation to disrupt Celtic’s rhythm. Sevilla created few real scoring chances, managing only two shots on target. Nicolas Maupay was shown a yellow card in the 96th minute as frustrations boiled over.
Statistically, Celta dominated the competition. The home team recorded 11 shots in total to Sevilla’s nine, with an expected goals advantage of 1.53 to 0.79. Celta completed 451 of 504 passes with 89 percent accuracy, controlling the tempo throughout. Fer Lopez had an influential performance, recording three key passes and five tackles while earning an 8.5 rating.
This victory brings Celta closer to securing European football next season. The three points reinforce their sixth position and keep the pressure on the teams above them. Sevilla’s struggles continue, leaving them vulnerable in the bottom half of the table as the season enters the final stretch.
