Hamzah Sheeraz captured the WBO super middleweight title on Saturday night, but his attention already seems to be on the biggest name in the division. The undefeated British fighter made it clear after stopping 39-year-old Alem Begic that a future fight against Canelo Alvarez is very much on his radar.
Sheeraz believes a fight against Canelo would be an honor, even after the Mexican star’s loss to Terence Crawford last year. He still considers Alvarez one of boxing’s elite names and someone worth chasing at 168 pounds.
“I believe he is one of the goats in boxing. So to share the ring with him will be an honor, and if I get the opportunity, I will definitely get the win,” Hamzah said after his win over Begic.
Sheeraz made these comments after saying he plans to collect more titles at super middleweight following his move up from 160 pounds.
“I’ll fight anybody. Listen, there were boxing royalty tonight, and I’m trying to follow in their footsteps. So, I just beat whoever was sitting in front of me.
“So, I’m going to collect all the belts and inshallah this time next year, you can see Hamzah Sheeraz as a unified champion at the 168 division,” Hamzah said.
The road to a Sheeraz-Canelo fight could open quickly if Alvarez defeats Christian Mbilli on September 12 in Riyadh. A win for Canelo would likely see him retain the WBC title, while Sheeraz now holds the WBO belt after Saturday’s win.
This would give Riyadh Season a ready-made unification fight between two marketable names at 168 pounds.
Sheeraz’s team already sounds interested in the game. After the fight, manager Spencer Brown openly pointed at Canelo while discussing the next step for the newly crowned champion.
“We’re moving on to the face of Canelo’s box,” Brown said.
“This is the fight we want.”
The timing may finally line up for Sheeraz. He’s now racked up back-to-back wins since moving up to super middleweight, and his size and offensive style seem to carry better at 168 than they did late in his middleweight run.
Canelo is still the biggest star by a mile, but Riyadh has shown he’s willing to match younger, undefeated fighters against established names if enough belts are involved. Sheeraz gave the impression on Saturday night that he believed he was already in that conversation.
