Jack Catterall says ‘Bring On Rolly’ after Egypt

Jack Catterall wasted little time targeting Rolando “Rolly” Romero after defeating Shakhram Giyasov in Egypt on Saturday night to capture the WBA “ordinary” welterweight title.

Catterall boxed sharply throughout the fight, dropping Giyasov en route to a clear decision victory. With the win, the 32-year-old now moves into position for a possible fight against Romero, who the WBA recently elevated to “super” champion status.

Catterall made it clear afterwards that he wanted the next step quickly rather than sit idle with the belt.

“I understand that there is something in place where he has to fight within a certain period of time,” Catterall told the Stomping Ground channel after the fight.

“I feel good. I feel fresh. No injuries. So come on Rolly, bring on whoever. I’ll be back in the gym next week waiting for him.”

The victory capped a long climb for Catterall, who spent years trying to work his way back into world title contention after a controversial decision loss to Josh Taylor in 2022. Although he later defeated Taylor in their rematch, that fight did not come with championship belts attached.

Saturday’s victory finally gave him a shot at a world title, although the WBA’s handling of the welterweight division has already drawn criticism after Romero was upgraded earlier this week.

Catterall said he still believes there is more to come despite the dominant performance against Giyasov.

“I’m my worst critic. I’ll go back and look at it and say, ‘Why didn’t I stop him? Why didn’t I do that?’ said Catterall.

“I want to be better. I’ll be back in the gym next week. I feel good. I have no injuries, and I’ll be better, and I’ll keep winning.”

Catterall also admitted that finally winning a title had personal meaning after years of setbacks and close calls at the top level.

“I think I needed it. It felt good, and it was part of my world title tonight,” Jack said.
