Hamzah Sheeraz says Turki has changed what is possible

Hamzah Sheeraz believes boxing has entered a different era under Turki Alalshikh, with the unbeaten British contender already booking big fights at 168lbs ahead of his world title fight against Alem Begic in Egypt.

Sheeraz will fight Begic for the vacant WBO super middleweight title on Saturday’s Oleksandr Usyk-Rico Verhoeven card at the Pyramids of Giza. The event has become one of the most unusual settings in recent boxing history, something Sheeraz says would have sounded impossible only a few years ago.

“Ever since his excellence got involved in the sport of boxing, there is nothing that was unthinkable to do. There is no dream that is big enough,” Hamzah Sheeraz told OOOSCH TV.

“Massive, massive credit and credit to him for giving fighters like me the opportunity to fight in these historic areas. Who would have thought I’d say I’m fighting for a world title in Egypt in front of the pyramids? If you’d asked me that, however many years ago, I would never have suggested that.”

The 25-year-old also looked beyond the Begic fight and spoke openly about the options he believes could open up if he captures the WBO belt this weekend.

“God willing, I’ll get over on Saturday, I’ll get the belt, and the options are endless to be fair. The 168 division is a massive division. Big fighters,” Sheeraz said.

“I can easily get a unification, I reckon. Whether it’s against any of the other champions, or Munguia, or whoever it is. But yeah, one step at a time.”

The comments are likely to draw attention from fans who are already discussing possible future fights involving Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, even though Canelo is scheduled to face Christian Mbilli in September.

Sheeraz admitted during the interview that he did not know much about Begic before the fight was ordered, but said the unbeaten Bosnian was simply the opponent standing between him and his first world title.
